Nov. 9th, 2017 06:38 pmI took a cab to my appointment and got there almost half an hour early. They took me back for vitals almost immediately, and then I didn't see the doctor until almost forty minutes after my appointment was supposed to start. That's very unusual for that clinic, but I suspect that it's down to the fact that she had a resident with her and needed to let him do things and then go over them to make sure he did them right.
I'd pretty much expected a uterine biopsy again, just because it's a relatively quick thing to do. It's about as uncomfortable as getting an IUD in or out, but the cramps afterward last longer. It's still minor as such things go.
Which is not to say that I was thrilled to have it done.
Ingress has been horribly, horribly slow for me during the last twenty four hours or so. I can get in, but it won't show me the game map (though it will give me the streets and show my position accurately), sometimes for as long as half an hour. When it does show, I get 1/3 to 1/2 of the portals that I know should be there, and interacting with portals in any way takes at least five minutes and sometimes as long as twenty. I also couldn't pick up any XM. When I got to the bus stop on my way home, I had a ten minute wait. I hacked the portal that's right there. The process finally completed when I was one block from home.
I'm cranky about Ingress because I don't get out to play it very often this time of year. The area where my appointment was and where I got lunch afterward is normally very rewarding for Ingress because it's in and near central campus.
Scott's going to have to work Sunday. We weren't expecting it because normally things slow down immensely and abruptly as soon as Halloween passes. This year, not so much. This means he'll only be able to drive for one of the choir leaf raking fundraisers and that Cordelia will need someone else to get her to the school on Sunday morning and home again after it's done. I emailed the choir teacher because I couldn't dig up any other contact information for the fundraiser.
I hope it's not out and out terrible that I told the teacher that, if carpooling isn't possible, I'd rather just give the choir the $30-$40 that I'd spend getting her there and home by cab, and keep her home all day. I'd prefer that Cordelia go, but that's a lot of money. (The city bus isn't a good option at the times she'd need to be traveling. The trip would take an hour and require a mid-route transfer at a place she's never been before. She'd also arrive late by 5-10 minutes

Date: 2017-11-10 01:42 pm (UTC)So many fundraisers are so incredibly inefficient ("get rich slow") -- I usually would rather just send in money and have the free time. I understand that when I do that it doesn't teach the kids to join into things to help their group, and that learning to do that is a valuable life skill. But earning money in some of these ways is just so painfully slow! So I think it's totally reasonable to just send in the cab fare instead of the kid.

Date: 2017-11-11 02:34 pm (UTC)On the other hand, Niantic's continued existence is kind of critical to Ingress going on, and I like playing Ingress. I expect that a Harry Potter game will help keep things going.
And it does explain why Niantic wants Ingress players to start submitting potential portal locations again.

Date: 2017-11-17 06:08 am (UTC)Actually, my biggest problem right now is that the Google car was apparently drunk or something when it mapped the town last and now several streets, including mine, are off by about 20 feet or more. My house is in the middle of the street according to Google and Pokemon Go.
I always wanted a more immersive Harry Potter game, more like what a lot of us thought Pottermore would be but now it's kind of like...how?
If we split up into Hogwarts houses, then that leaves out Ilvermorny even though Fantastic Beasts has people who went there. Some people think we're catching Fantastic Beasts but that seems kind of repetitive, too.

Date: 2017-11-22 07:38 pm (UTC)I can still do other dataplan related things without wifi-- web browsing, email, Life360 (family tracking GPS based app) etc. I haven't added any apps, and I don't have many apps at all.
It's only Ingress, and no one else I've talked to is having the same problem (there's a Slack channel for local players in my faction). I'll get the street grid, and it will show my location accurately, updating that as I move. Any game specific information, however, takes between 5 and 30 minutes of me being in one place to load (just tested since there was an update earlier today. It took seven minutes for me to get game information after the street grid became visible). Hacking, placing resonators, etc. takes between 10 and 20 minutes. Linking is impossible.
Attacking... well, most bursters error out before processing, so I assume that they have a time limit. Accessing my inventory takes at least as long as the rest of it. Each time. Sometimes, the program insists that all I have is whatever I've hacked since I started the program most recently even though it otherwise has my information.
Basically, all I can think is that there's something wrong with my phone. I'm going to try uninstalling some apps to see if it's a memory thing, but most of what I've got is pre-installed and therefore impossible to delete. (I really think that a pinyin keyboard app should be opt-in in the US.) It might just be that my phone is old.
I'm not at all sure how to make a Harry Potter related GPS game. The canon is very localized, and making it about catching Fantastic Beasts, while possible, would basically be just slapping new names on the Pokemon Go engine. Which would, I suppose, be cheap, but... I don't know that people will get passionate about something that obviously cheap.
Anything else would require creating a lot of new story. Ingress has story, but... Creating a consistent story, especially one that big and ongoing, within an existing and open canon is not easy at all.
