Sep. 22nd, 2009 09:20 amCordelia is recovering from a cold. I'm in the middle of the worst part of it. I knew I'd catch it because she's been clinging to me, rubbing my hair against her face and generally seeking Mama comfort. Scott's still hoping to avoid it (I'm hoping too. He has vacation scheduled for next week. It's a rotten time to get sick).
I just hope that I can avoid have my asthma kick up. So far, it hasn't, but I haven't really gotten to the coughing part of things yet.
The first two weeks of school, cold apart, have gone fairly well. Cordelia hates getting up in the morning, but I'm doing better on time management for us this year. Making my morning coffee half with boiling water and half with cold water has made a bigger difference than I expected (I use instant powdered stuff. Scott bought me an insulated cup with a lid that keeps the heat forever. I can't drink really hot coffee but like the size and stability of the cup. The half and half of different water temperatures means I can start drinking right away).
I'm still working on figuring out what to put in Cordelia's lunches. She doesn't have very much time to eat because they send the lower grades out for lunch recess before they eat and then expect them to eat rapidly. From what I've heard from other parents, some of the kids who take hot lunches get five minutes or less to eat. At least we don't have that problem.
I have to pack a snack for Cordelia, too. She's asked me to make it bigger, but she still wants it to be a single item. I'm stumped. I can put a second item in, but I can't think of something bigger that she'll actually eat. The snack can't require keeping cold, has to be something dairy free and nut free, has to be something she can open herself and so on.
Friday was my first day volunteering in the school library. I think I'm going to hate the timing on that. I decided to do two classes this year since Cordelia's gone twice as long. Her class, having forty-nine students, divides into two parts for library and other special classes, and I'm assisting for both classes. Both go to the library on Friday afternoon, but there's another class in between the two. There's also only forty minutes between the second class and the end of the school day. That means that I'll probably be going in at 12:45 and staying until school ends at 3:42. That's a long afternoon out of the house. I suppose I'll see how it goes.
The first Friday of school, there was a welcome back picnic in the evening. I fed Cordelia before we went because I knew she wouldn't eat once we got to the playground. (As far as I could tell, none of the kids did.) It was chilly, and I was underdressed, but we stuck it out for an hour and a half.
At that point, we wanted to get Cordelia home and ready for bed. She had a nine a.m. soccer game the next day, so we knew she'd need the sleep. Unfortunately, Cordelia had other ideas. She kept running from us every time Scott put her down. By the time we got her home, she was threatening to run away and never come back. We got her inside, and she admitted that she'd miss us. Then she said she had to give us each a goodbye hug and kiss and proceeded to do so.
I'm not sure how we kept straight faces. We did, though, and we distracted her with a DVD and a snack.
I've figured out transportation for most of our soccer games. There are one or two in October that may be an issue. I'm not ready to worry about them yet, and there's a girl on the team who lives about a quarter of a mile from here. I don't know her parents well, but they're a fallback option. Most of the other folks on the team who I could ask live within walking distance of the park where those games will be, so I need a different strategy.
Last weekend's game was on Sunday rather than Saturday, due to the holidays. Scott's parents came. Cordelia played better than she did in the first game. She didn't flinch from the ball or hold back at the last minute quite so much. I'd been concerned that the cold would mean she couldn't play, but she did okay apart from tiring out a bit faster than usual.
