I wrote about 250 words on the pinch hit last night. There are a couple of decisions I need to make, things that I'm not going to just discover by writing them. Sadly, since it's Thursday, my entire day has been eaten by chores and by having Cordelia in our room while the cleaning lady is here.

Scott and I talked a bit about ideas for the RPG I want to pull together for UCon. I need to have a solid idea before I sign up because I need (at the very least!) a system, a title, and a blurb. Running things at a convention doesn't really play to my strengths as a GM. I'm much better at campaigns because, for those, an hour of wandering doesn't drag things down as long as the players are all having fun. Convention games need endings and need to have things actually happen to get there. Those are the parts of story creation that I'm not quite so good at.

I think it's going to be another year of home rules rather than a set game system. I'll probably make the characters in GURPS again and then run in percentile. (I like GURPS because there's a game supplement for almost everything. What there isn't a supplement for is pretty easy to extrapolate from existing materials. I like percentile because anyone can look at 01-00 and have a fair idea of where their roll falls on the number line between them.)

Scott and I also discussed our differing approaches to rules. He thinks that systems like FATE and Cortex Plus which require thinking about ways to make aspects of one's character useful to increase one's die rolls encourage role playing. I think they get in the way of role playing. Some of this may be me having spent a lot of time, as a player, just rolling whatever dice the people who knew the rules told me to combining with me, as a GM, having mostly run Amber Diceless and LARPs.

I find creating a narrative to explain the dice I intend to roll to be a distraction from creating the story. Scott sees creating those same narratives as building blocks of story and characterization. I think that it's related to him being an outliner and me not being.
