Book Logging: Fanfic
Jan. 20th, 2019 04:56 pmLong fics read in the last few months:
Note: I'm not listing anything shorter than 5K words because I don't have that kind of time. I'm also not listing anything I didn't finish or didn't enjoy. I recommend these stories if they sound at all to your taste. One or two are WIP which I don't ordinarily list, but they're WIP that I particularly liked.
AJHall. A Vor in Provence - Crossover of the Vorkosigan Saga with the Lord Peter Wimsey series. 6150 words. Harriet Vane meets a stranger in a hotel bar during a thunderstorm. Link to the story.
aloneintherain. journey to the past - My Hero Academia. This is a very sweet and kind of comforting story. I knew nothing about canon when I read it, and this story prompted me to take a look at the anime and manga. The story changes offscreen bits of story and almost entirely elides canon events. I could still follow what was going on. When he's five, Izuku starts having problems with being attacked by supervillains. Fortunately, he's always rescued. He's just puzzled because the rescuing superheroes won't give him their names and because he can't find any information about them online. Even with zero knowledge of the canon, I was pretty clear what was going on, but it made sense that Izuku wouldn't think of it. 36K words and technically a WIP (the second chapter ends at a point when the story could be considered satisfyingly over. The author's note says that all that's left is a prologue. I'd enjoy that, but I don't think it's essential). There are some SPaG errors; I don't consider them sufficient to stop me reading and rereading, but YMMV. Link to the story.
aloneintherain. yesterday, I saw a change - Spider-Man. Peter Parker has been captured by villains who broadcast video of unmasking him and identify him by name. The focus is on Aunt May trying to keep ahead of the villains coming after her and on all of the people who help her on her way. 6874 words. Link to the story.
calliope85. The Invisible City; or, Dick Mayhew and his Marvellous Cat - Neverwhere. This has something of the feel of the book in terms of deep history and layers of meaning. Richard spends most of the story missing those layers. He knows they're there, but he doesn't have a feel for ritual. He might have gone along with it anyway because it had to be done, but... The ending is ambiguous about what the completion of De Carabas's plan will mean for Richard. 14K words. Link to the story.
coreomajoris. Murderbot's Accidental Exchange Program - The Murderbot Diaries/Imperial Radch Series. The not-so-very-intelligent uncrewed cargoship Murderbot is traveling with ends up in a place that isn't on any of their charts. Murderbot has to ask the locals for help in getting back to known space. 8605 words. Link to the story.
drayton. False Pretences - Lord Peter series. Casefic. Set after Busman's Honeymoon. Harriet goes to a writers' retreat for a group project in the vein of The Floating Admiral. While she's there, someone stuffs a corpse in the boot of her car. 27442 words. Link to the story.
Elenothar. Always comes around again - Star Wars fanfic. 19935 words. Poe Dameron in an Groundhog Day loop of events of The Last Jedi. Link to the story.
EmptySurface. Hear the Silence - Naruto. Original Characters. Set during the Second Shinobi War, so very few canonical characters appear. The POV character is born with some memories of a previous life in our world, including memories of having read/watched Naruto. As she's not in a time period canon gave a lot of detail about, this mostly affects her maturity levels and how seriously she takes the dangers that others her own physical age disregard. Events are both heartbreaking and extremely compelling. A lot of characters die. A lot of characters end up with permanent injuries and/or PTSD. I found this compelling and enjoyable but not fun (if the distinction makes sense). This is not a romp. WIP at 348K words. Link to the story.
Ferritin4. Hold the Line - Nero Wolfe fanfic. 19698 words. Saul Panzer POV. There’s a case in the background, and Saul is doing his extremely competent thing, but that part isn’t the emotional core of the story. The core is Saul being sure of who he is but not nearly so sure that Wolfe and Archie will still do business with him or welcome him to the brownstone once they realize that he’s into guys. That part ends happily, and the case wraps up satisfactorily. Link to the story.
fresne. Parts Unknown: Bajor - Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown RPF/Star Trek: Deep Space Nine crossover. This is pretty much what the title indicates. There are a lot of references to past violence of the sort implicit in the canon backstory for Bajor. 7573 words. Link to the story.
greenkangaroo. Time Travel Tango, or, Rasa and the Cat - Naruto fanfic. 10140 words. Kankuro gets thrown back in time to when Gaara is still tiny. Kankuro sets out to help his siblings and his younger self. Link to the story.
greenkangaroo. Chouji’s Fancy Hat - This is technically a WIP, but each chapter, so far, has stood well as a potential end point to the story. For some reason, nobody wants to be Hokage after Kakashi. Chouji's the one who doesn't manage to say 'no' fast enough or firmly enough. Surprisingly, he's pretty damned good at the job. 11K words. Link to the story.
greerwatson. Hot Buttered Crumpets - Crossover fic with Lucy Pevensie meeting Alice of Alice in Wonderland shortly after events in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. 5004 words. Link to the story.
lettered. Let's Stop the Time Warp (Again) - MCU. The time loop, at first, only affects Steve. Attempts to get him out of it lead, unfortunately, to the entire world stuck in a loop and completely aware of it. Reactions vary, but most people come together to add their efforts to making a solution more likely. The plan is huge, involving people and supplies from all over the world. The main enemy is the brief duration of their time window, and many people start getting frustrated and lashing out. 113K words. Link to the story.
metisket. There May Be Some Collateral Damage - Bleach/Harry Potter. Reread. Ichigo gets sent to Hogwarts to act as Harry's bodyguard and to use Harry as a stalking goat. The Shinigami find Horcruxes really appalling, and Voldemort is definitely their business. Given that the local Soul Society hasn't managed to deal with him... Well. The author's note on the fic comments that they hadn't seen other fics addressing the fact that sending Ichigo to Hogwarts is like aiming a wrecking ball at the castle. Ichigo manages his mission, and the collateral damage is pretty funny (for the reader, not so much for any of the characters living it.) 61K words. Link to the story.
Mhalachai. Turn, Archer, and Heed the Wild Hunt - MCU/Narnia. In 1983, Clint Barton ends up with a new foster mother, Susan Pevensie. I really like the interactions between Susan and young Clint. He's got rock bottom expectations, and she's still Queen Susan the Gentle. I'm a bit curious about the what if? at the end of the story, but the choices the characters made fit with who they are and with the rest of the story. I just wonder. 24K words. Link to the story.
Neery. Winter's Children - MCU. While he's on the run, post-CA: WS, the Winter Soldier finds out that Hydra tried to use Steve Rogers' DNA to produce young, cloned supersoldiers. Those attempts were largely unsuccessful because the serum's effects weren't passed on. The Winter Soldier rescues two then sets out to find the others. There are a lot of references to abuse and indoctrination of those children and to the unpleasant deaths of some of their siblings. Everyone has some degree of PTSD. 67K words. Link to the story.
PitViperofDoom. Yesterday Upon the Stair - My Hero Academia. AU in which Izuku can see dead people. This one is dark (but T rated) and complicated, and I love the character development. While I might not have written these characters this way, this story is the sort of thing that I might write (which is either a recommendation or a dis-recommendation). Izuku here is a bit different from canon Izuku but still, I think, recognizable. He's just been dealing with traumatized ghosts and trying to help them for many years, and that adds maturity. 374K words. WIP but recently updated and listed as 55/60 chapters. The story has inspired works by other authors. Link to the story.
Pohadka. The Job Between Here and There - MCU/Leverage. The Leverage crew end up taking in post-Winter Soldier James Buchanan Barnes and trying to help him recover and stay free. 7 part series at 182K words. Link to the story.
rthstewart. The King Under The Mountain - Agent Carter/Indiana Jones series. As the War in Europe winds down, Dr Jones is sent to work with Agent Carter and the Howling Commandos to stop a last ditch, magical attempt by the Germans to wake something that will turn the tides against the Allies. 9529 words. Link to the story.
scioscribe. The Never-Puts-Down-the-Phone Cure - Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle Series. Mrs Piggle-Wiggle is immortal, so this is a present day story with a girl and a smart phone. The style is very in keeping with canon, including the expected beats of the story. 5620 words. Link to the story.
scioscribe. the real banishment is the family we made along the way - Thor fanfic. After Loki’s invasion of Earth, Odin imprisons Loki with Hela. 5332 words. Link to the story.
ShanaStoryteller. Biting Her Tongue - Yona of the Dawn. This is a canon divergent AU. Back at the very beginning, Yona manages to remain silent when she sees her cousin murder her father. Rather than flee, she returns to her bed and pretends ignorance. She knows what can happen to inconvenient princesses. She becomes queen and marries her cousin. Most of the story is focused on her trying to find a way to be okay with that choice. Warning for infidelity. 21K words. Link to the story.
Silver Queen. Dreaming of Sunshine - Naruto self-insert AU. WIP at 709K words. Epically long story featuring a self-insert OC. I found it a vast amount of fun. There are a number of fics by other people that spin off from this, and there's a DW community, too. I don't know that I'd call the end of the most recent chapter a satisfying end point, but it's not a cliffhanger. Link to the story.
slippin_into_darkness and SpiritsFlame. Satisfaction Brought It Back - DCU (Comics). Batman gets turned into a cat. Superman rescues him from a tree and takes him back to a Metropolis apartment. Since Bruce has no idea how to change back or how a cat might get from Metropolis to Gotham, he decides to take advantage of the opportunity to find out Superman's secrets. He finds himself extremely surprised. 18K words. Link to the story.
st_aurafina. Every Chambered Cell - Imperial Radch Series. Fleet Captain Uemi's daughter visits the Republic of Two Systems, ostensibly asking for help. 6334 words. Link to the story.
thepartyresponsible. Do Every Stupid Thing - MCU/Batman - All Media Types. Jason Todd/young Tony Stark/Bucky Barnes. Jason sets out to stop the Winter Soldier from assassinating Howard and Maria Stark. He only partially succeeds in that but does manage to capture the Winter Soldier. Then Tony Stark captures both of them because Jason misjudged him, too. It all somehow works in terms of meshing the worlds and getting the three of them working together. Series of four stories at 275K words total. Link to the story.
viridiansky. Rank Yourself Last - Detective Conan fanfic. 41825 words. Slow burn developing relationship between Akai Shuuichi and Amuro Touru. Due to us still not having ILL, I haven’t gotten far enough in the manga to meet these characters, but I got by okay with general background knowledge. There’s a lot of Black Organization backstory in this one. Link to the story.
Zelos. Cover Your Tracks - Spider-Man: Homecoming, MCU. Peter Parker's high school principal actually is paying attention. 22K word series. Link to the story.
Note: I'm not listing anything shorter than 5K words because I don't have that kind of time. I'm also not listing anything I didn't finish or didn't enjoy.
