I just emailed the University of Michigan Residential College to see if I could set up an appointment for Cordelia to visit. It's where I went. I don't know that she'll have any interest in it, but I thought it might be a manageable place to start since it's easy for us to get to by city bus and since it's not quite as overwhelming as the university as a whole.

I just feel like the whole school visit process is going to be hard for us and like I should push to get it going.

I have three more emails that I should deal with today and two phone calls. One of those calls may require a trip out, and I kind of need to go to Kroger anyway. We're nearly out of lunchmeat and bread. I have a prescription to refill at Kroger, but that could wait until Saturday.

Scott got the taxes dealt with over the weekend. It was a frustrating process because TurboTax hung for several hours, completely unable to submit our forms. He tells me that we got enough back to cover the car insurance payment, so there's that.

I offered on and got a pinch hit that's due near the same time that my Wayback story is. I need to get moving on both of those. The pinch hit has had two false starts so far. I think I need to start more in media res and possibly from a different point of view.

Possibly useful: There is a college fair at Pioneer coming up on Tuesday the 23rd. It's big and crowded, but James and I went to it last year and thought it was helpful. We arrived early, before the crowd, and started off standing around with no idea what to do, so a nearby college representative who was sitting at a table near us with nothing to do started talking with us. As we talked, we realized that her college was pretty much the polar opposite of what would suit James -- and that was helpful, because it gave us several ideas for things to avoid in a college. Next we talked to a rep from Oberlin, and that genuinely was helpful, and the school seemed like a good match.

Also, does Cordelia's school do a Junior Conference? The counselors at James's school meet individually with each kid to talk about what would be a good fit in a college, and to suggest some schools that might be a good match. James had his conference a few weeks ago. His counselor was able to suggest a list of schools that are LGBT-friendly, liberal, offer the things he wants to study, and are likely to accept someone with his grades -- and that gave us a good starting point, though I think James is daunted by the length of the list. If Cordelia's school offers something like that, then it might be possible to set up an earlier meeting with a school counselor, now, to start getting an idea of which schools might be good choices. If it's like James' school, the counselors don't mind being asked and are happy to talk.

(James' counselor is amazing! He looks like an overgrown student, but he can fix up a bungled school schedule with the wave of his computer, or tell you how to navigate changing your gender at school, or help you to pick a college, and nothing ever seems to faze him. Also, he is almost the only person in the entire school who reliably returns e-mails, and that right there is huge.)
