Part of me is very much looking forward to the end of the school year. Scott will still be getting up between 5:30 and 6:00, but Cordelia won't be.

Part of me is not looking forward to it because my medication and meal schedule has to be reshuffled if I don't eat breakfast between 6:00 and 7:00. Right now, I take three meds right when Scott's alarm goes off and then have breakfast half an hour to 45 minutes later.

One of the meds needs a certain time gap between the first and second dose of the day. If I take the first dose at 5:30, I can take the second any time between 9:30 and 2:00. I normally take that second dose with lunch and with my multivitamin.

The multivitamin needs to be a minimum of four hours before (or after) I take my thyroid medication. I can't move it earlier by too much because, if I take it in close proximity (I need two hours, at least) to breakfast and coffee, I will end up losing my breakfast at least one day in ten. Coffee two or more hours later in the day doesn't seem to interact with the dratted thing at all.

I can separate taking the twice a day med from the multivitamin, but I need to keep them in the same compartment of my daily med sorter box. Those have seven compartments, and I fill all of them. The multivitamins don't fit the well. I have to play tetris with any meds that I want in the same compartment. I'm not sure it would fit in the compartment with either set of post-thyroid medications; I'm also not sure that I want to take a multivitamin in close proximity to bedtime.

The other problem medication is the omeprozale. I'm supposed to take it as close to 30 minutes before my first meal of the day as possible, definitely not less than 30 minutes and strongly recommended not to be longer. My gastroenterologist says that it's utterly useless if I take at the wrong time relative to when I eat. When I take it at 5:30, it gives me a window that can last as late as 2:00 during which I can eat things containing garlic or onions or that have been fried.

Taking the medication later in the day and having a later first meal doesn't shift the window. I don't know why. It just means that, when I don't take it early, I'm trying to cram most of my day's eating into a four hour period which is no fun at all.

The current distribution for my meds is as follows:

Su compartment: propranolol, buproprion, omeprozale
M compartment: calcium, folic acid, magnesium
Tu compartment: vitamin D gummies
W compartment: multivitamin (with iron), buproprion
Th compartment: levothyroxine
F compartment: singular, loratidine, ranitidine
Sa compartment: tylenol, halcion

I could free up one compartment by going to a tablet for the D. Those tablets are tiny and would fit in the Tu compartment which are all things I normally take at the same time. But we just bought two bottles of the gummies. I don't see a way to shift things to open up any other compartments.

I need a compartment for the omeprozale between the compartment for the buproprion and propranol and the compartment for the vitamins. I also need a compartment either between the vitamins and my second dose of buproprion or between the buproprion and the levothyroxine. The multivitamin would fit in the compartment with the levothyroxine but not in the compartment with other vitamins.

I suppose I could just keep things I take at different times in the same compartment and assume that I can track that. It would have to be the multivitamin and the buproprion, but I really, really can't separate the stuff in the first compartment that way, not when I'm just barely awake and often don't have light.

Using the pill boxes is helpful because I can fill all seven once a week (usually on Friday) and know which ones I'll need to refill when. It's also helpful because I can look at the box and see what I have and haven't take. It won't tell me when I took them, but it removes a lot of stress and uncertainty, particularly for the levothyroxine and the meds in the F and Sa compartments.

I'd really love a third extra compartment, if I'm going pie in the sky. I could put my take-as-needed meds into it and know whether or not I've taken them at all that day. It wouldn't let me know when, but it would keep me from doubling up naproxen or ativan and make sure I could find both.

I don't really need larger compartments, just more of them. I'd like to keep whatever I use at no more than twice the current size. The one I have will fit into a specific purse side pocket or into a pocket in my clothing. I try to keep the box with me all day, as I move from place to place, so I like having the option to put the thing in my pocket while I'm at home and in my purse (with a zipper to keep it from falling out) when I'm at home.

The meal component mostly has to do with the window of expanded options. Taking the multivitamin and second dose of buproprion is a remind that I should eat something more substantial/interesting than I'll be able to handle later on.

At any rate, I'm going to poke around online to see if I can find a 10 compartment pill box set. This is solvable. I'm just cranky about needing to, and writing it all out like this helps me untangle the cranky from the to-do.

That is really complicated.

The idea of "pill tetris" makes a neat picture in my head. :)
