Jun. 9th, 2013 06:23 pmYesterday was a beautiful day for a soccer game. It was around 70 and sunny. I was overdressed as I'd picked my clothes based on the outside temperature at about 10:00 and the game was at 2:30. At least the long sleeves kept me from getting sunburned. Cordelia's team won their game by one goal.
In the evening, Cordelia went fishing with a friend and her family at Independence Lake. From what she says, it was some sort of big organized event. She never had to put bait on her own hook or remove the fish she caught from the hook. She doesn't know what happened to the fish she caught. They certainly didn't come home with her.
While Cordelia was out, Scott and I caught up on The Colbert Report, Mythbusters, and Warehouse 13. The other mother called at 8:30 to ask if they could take Cordelia with them to Pizza Hut, and I said yes. With Cordelia still out, we decided to try the first episode of Sinbad.
For me, I think Sinbad was a mistake. I react very badly to things involving danger of drowning or nasty things coming up out of the water, and this episode had enough of that to give me trouble when I went to bed. (The worst movie going experience of my life was when Scott and another friend took me to see The Abyss. I'd never heard of it and had no idea what it was about. Scott and the other friend did know what it was about but didn't know my phobia. I white knuckled through it, but it was pretty thoroughly awful. I probably should have gotten up and walked out, but it didn't occur to me at the time.) If I remember, I may give Sinbad one more episode to catch my attention. I like the idea of a fantasy show where most of the characters aren't white.
We recorded Primeval: New World. Scott watched part of it, but I was tired and wanted to go to bed even though Cordelia wasn't yet home. She got home about 10:30 and almost immediately got into the shower. By the time she was done, I was in my nightgown and ready to turn out the light. Cordelia was more than a little disconcerted by this. She really doesn't like it when I go to bed early. (Even though this wasn't at all early.)
Today, around 11:30, we went to Briarwood Mall so that Cordelia could spend the $30 gift card her Disease Detectives coach gave her for doing so much extra work. (I think $30 was a bit much. $10, I could have seen easily because she was helpful. She typed up all of the information people brought to the meetings, printed out multiple copies and handed them out at the next meeting. The coach thought I was doing the work, but when she thanked me for it, I told her it was all Cordelia). The gift card was for Justice, a tween girls' clothing store. Justice was having a big sale, so Cordelia was able to get two shirts and a mood ring for her gift card and three cents more.
From Justice, we went to the sporting goods store in the mall and bought Cordelia a new softball glove. They're using a bigger ball this year (still, I believe, not full size), so the coach strongly recommended new gloves.
After that, we headed to the library to return a few things and pick up several holds. Cordelia likes checking books out, but she's not so good about actually finishing them. I've instituted a policy that she can renew things twice before I insist on returning them, unread or not. Some things, of course, she can't renew at all because somebody else wants them. She's always a bit cranky when that happens.
After the library, we stopped to get bubble tea then went home for lunch. I had time to lie down after lunch for about forty-five minutes before we needed to head out for the last soccer game of the season. Scott asked the parents to have the girls there half an hour early so that they could do a team picture before warm up. Naturally, that didn't work out. About half the girls showed up early. The others trickled in. Scott finally gave up and did the picture with one girl missing (she arrived about three minutes after the picture taking was done).
This time, I dressed in short sleeves but brought a cardigan. The temperature was about the same as yesterday, but the sun wasn't out. Some of the time, I wanted the cardigan, and some of the time I didn't.
Cordelia's team lost, four goals to zero, but the girls remained cheerful. Scott gave out the participation certificates after the game. We'd brought watermelon, but so did another family, so ours came home with us (we've sent it to Cordelia's softball practice. Hopefully those girls will eat it all). The team parents gave Scott a card with a Starbucks gift card inside. Scott's never set foot in a Starbucks and doesn't drink coffee, so who knows what he'll do with a $30 gift card? I'm sure he'll find something.
We stopped at Dairy Queen on the way home. There's no longer an ice cream place on our side of town, so stopping for ice cream is a big deal, requiring a bit of a drive. In this case, the Dairy Queen was on our way home, so it made sense. We have no idea why the local Baskin-Robbins went out of business. There always seemed to be people in there, even in the winter.
Right now, Cordelia's at softball practice. The coach has moved practices from the local middle school (within walking distance for him) to Cordelia's school (walking distance for us). He wasn't happy with the field conditions at Clague, too many pebbles, and apparently the bases weren't spaced correctly. There's going to be one practice at Clague, this coming Wednesday, but everything else will be at Cordelia's school.
