Christmas Eve's family gathering was more laid back than I expected it to be because my FIL has taken a job delivering delayed luggage. Our BIL went with him to keep him company, and neither of them were back before we went home. That meant that the board games were calmer. It also meant that nobody argued with our niece and nephew when they both said they wanted to skip going to church. I think Scott's sister considered skipping, too, but it was important to their mother. Of course, at that point, we realized that we didn't have time to get to either of the Methodist churches in town. We ended up at a Lutheran church because it was only 10 minutes away and because the minister has worked with Scott's father on Gideons. We got into the pew just as everything started.

It was a nice service with about twice as many carols as I expected, all but one of them things that I knew. I think Cordelia knew most of them, too. "The First Noel" may not be one she'd encountered before, though. I'm not sure. Scott's mother sat between me and Cordelia, so Cordelia couldn't hear me singing badly but enthusiastically. That was better for both of us.

The church building was smaller than what I'm used to seeing with the Methodists, and it was only about 3/4 full which is a sparser congregation than I expected for a Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m.

For Yuletide, I got a story for the Hamster Princess series - Ursula Vernon. It's long and excellently in character and voice. It made me laugh. It's also the only Hamster Princess story this year. The other three Hamster Princess stories on AO3 were written for me for last year's Yuletide.

I received a very nice recipient comment on the story I wrote plus a handful of comments from other people who remembered the canon fondly.

I couldn't go to the big family gathering because my nephew now has a cat and brought it home from college with him for break. I hadn't wanted to have to attend both days of family togetherness, so I wasn't as unhappy as I might have been not to be able to go.

Mainly, I regret the food. My SIL prepared some things specially for me and sent them home with Scott and Cordelia, but they ended up inside the Instant Pot. I found them 17 hours after they got home and had to throw the meat out. The slice of pecan pie was still excellent, though.

I went for a walk during the afternoon. I had found my hiking boots but only after Scott and Cordelia were gone. I didn't want to hurt my hands putting them on, so I went out in my loafers with the intention of simply being careful where I walked. I didn't slip or fall, but I wasn't as cautious as I should have been. I found a path down to a bigger trail running along the river and walked along it for a good way. There were a lot of other people passing on the path, so I figured that, if I fell badly, there'd be options for assistance. I was a little boggled at the people who were running on the path, though, because it was muddy/squishy.

I didn't walk as far as I'd hoped to. I turned back when I started to feel wobbly. I'd brought some cheese, nuts, and dried cranberries, and those gave me the oomph to manage the last 3-4 blocks to get home. It was much less of a walk than I'd have expected to manage last summer, only an hour, but finding a new-to-me trail was nice. I haven't been able to figure out if the trail has a name. I'm assuming that it's a city maintained thing because it was clearly well kept and well known.

At some point, I'd like to go back to the trail and find the other end of it since I came in in the middle and walked it to one end. The end I walked to had a stair up to street level which was a relief because I had been concerned about trying to climb any of the paths up the steep hill.

I ate Kroger fried chicken for lunch and dinner, and I cooked myself a zucchini with a little bit of spinach, too. I was nervous about slicing it, but I managed to keep it steady for most of the process by holding the unsliced part off the edge of the counter.

Scott and Cordelia got home considerably earlier than I expected them to. Scott was disappointed that there wasn't much game playing beyond Telestrations.

Saturday, we had a friend over, and we tried the fully cooperative version of the Warehouse 13 game. I think it went fairly well. We were mainly playing it for proof of concept. Scott and our friend thought that the cooperative version might need more challenges (the rules offer options for that). I don't mind games being moderately easy, so I wasn't bothered by that part.

We had some issues because I'm currently doing better without overhead lights. I wore sunglasses through a lot of the game. I can read on my phone or laptop if the room is otherwise dark. I'm okay with a bedside lamp in our bedroom in addition to my laptop. It's just that that lamp isn't enough light to read most books by.

I have an appointment with my doctor for late January and one with an eye specialist at the beginning of March (they bumped it back from the end of February). I haven't been able to find an unscented baby shampoo in the store (options for searching have been limited), so I've been washing around my eyes with Dove bath bars and a washcloth.

The problem is inflammation in the skin around my eyes, and somehow, that's led to photosensitivity. I've got redness, swelling, exzema, cracking, itching and burning. There's a small blister at the corner of one eye. My eyeballs look fine and seem to be fine apart from the photosensitivity. If I have to be out in full light, keeping one eye covered helps because the skin around that eye will hurt less. I switch off which one is covered. If I keep the covered eye open, I see better than if I close it. Covering is better than just closing my eyes, so I think the skin is sensitive.

When I went for my walk on Christmas, I used the eye patch for much of it. Part of the appeal of the trail I found was that it was fully shaded even with the trees December bare. Walking around outside with one eye covered was anxiety inducing because I was losing so much of my field of vision and didn't feel like I was seeing the rest clearly.

Hamster Princess! Oh, I adore that series, glad to hear that you got a lovely story (and adding it to my 'read later' list)
