Jun. 23rd, 2013 04:27 pmI now have a dress for Scott's parents' fiftieth. I don't love the dress, but it does everything it's supposed to. It even matches the colors for the occasion.
We went to JC Penney this afternoon to look for a dress shirt for Scott and a dress for me. Scott didn't end up getting anything. He's thoroughly uncertain of his size, doesn't even have an approximation. He also decided that he ought to try on his suit to see if it fits before he starts buying anything. I suspect that it won't fit. He hasn't worn it in nearly a decade, and I don't think it fit right then.
I actually found two dresses that were possible. The less expensive of the two was a blue I really liked but that didn't match what Scott's mother wants. It was also very short by my standards (I prefer dresses that come down below the knee). I liked the cut of it, apart from it being so short, but I'd have needed to get a slip.
The dress I ended up buying is a better color match for what Scott's mother wants. It's a varying blue with sort of stripes (not exactly). It's also just a bit longer and has a built in slip. It also cost three times as much. It's machine washable but has to line dry (I didn't check the care instructions on the dress I didn't get). I worry that it will wrinkle.
I'm just relieved to have this taken care of. I wasn't optimistic about finding something, given the color requirements and my size (the dress I bought is a 22W). A friend of mine who does more clothing shopping than I do mentioned three places to look. JC Penney was simply the easiest of the three to get to and the only one where Scott could shop, too.
On the way to shopping, we stopped at the library. They're hosting a thing this weekend for comic books. The third floor was full of tables staffed by writers and artists, selling their work. Cordelia started out really eager to see what was going on but quickly grew bored. I think Scott would have liked to spend more time browsing.
Scott's hopeful that there won't be quite so much overtime going forward. The fellow on second shift who was on medical leave has returned, and they've hired and trained a new guy on third shift. That means it's just occasional vacation coverage.

Date: 2013-06-23 11:13 pm (UTC)I wouldn't worry about clothes while money is so tight. God will understand.

Date: 2013-06-23 11:16 pm (UTC)Yeah, I have plenty of clothes, but no nice clothes. Not a single skirt. But it's probably not going to happen this year. Honestly, I can't even afford the tickets to the high holy days, which sucks but not much I can do about it.

Oh -- Bruce had really good luck going to the Big and Tall Men's store that's in the strip mall across from Arborland. He got a really nice sport coat and some dress shirts that fit him well and they didn't cost an arm and a leg (maybe only a leg). I can recommend it.

Date: 2013-06-24 11:43 am (UTC)The dress makes me feel larger than I am, I think. Both dresses had that problem.
I'll mention the Big and Tall Men's store to Scott. I think it might be a good idea for him to go there if he needs a suit.

Date: 2013-06-25 02:04 am (UTC)Scott's not sure how long the new guy on third shift will last. A lot of people quit fairly quickly, even in this economy, and this guy may be in danger of being let go for not being dreadfully good at his job.
