Oct. 15th, 2009 01:26 pmThe meeting with Cordelia's teachers went well. I think a big part of it was them wanting to make sure that I understood why they're putting her at K level instead of at M (her last kindergarten report card put her at M). Basically, her word recognition and fluency have outstripped her ability to follow a story and to infer non-explicit details. This is quite normal for her age, and the K level stories are easier to understand.
My main concern when they explained was that her stage of development was actually age appropriate. As long as she's learning and isn't struggling with things they expect her already to know, I'm content to trust them and to keep doing what we have been doing. Cordelia will grow, and her understanding will deepen as she does.
We have a list of questions to ask her about stories we read (about stories we watch, too, I think). They're questions about motivation, about how the characters change, about what she thinks the point of the story is. I'm going to have to work at remembering them, but I think I can. The biggest challenge will be asking them in ways that don't make her resist.
Cordelia had her first reading session with the second grade group yesterday. There's one other girl from her class going, and the older sister of one of her friends is in the group. That means she knows two people to start. She brought home a book that she gets to keep until Monday. From what she said, the group read and discussed it during the session.
