Wearing heavy braces most of the day helps the hard and wrist pain, so I suspect carpal tunnel. The problem is that wearing the braces messes up my elbows, shoulders, and neck. I’m going to have to be very careful to balance this.

I also suspect that the increase in hand and wrist issues connects to the laptop setup I use in the living room. It used to be just right, but the height of the tiny table (room for my laptop and a mug of coffee and little else) is adjustable. I didn’t use it much between October 2019 and the beginning of June. I just worked in the bedroom, sitting on the bed (largely because Cordelia ate breakfast at the table every morning before school and never cleared the dishes but also because that let her watch The Office without me having to watch, too). I didn't notice a change in the height of the table, but I adjusted it lower today, and it seems more natural.

Also, I asked Scott, and he admitted that he'd raised it because it was better for him for video meetings on his phone (we have a tripod, so it needs a table). He's a foot taller than I am, so convenient height for him is quite different than for me. I'm not sure why I didn't think of it sooner. I understand why he didn't. He's never needed to worry about desk ergonomics. He's not prone to RSI issues, and he doesn't routinely work at a desk.

Cordelia says that she changed the height from what Scott had put it at but that she's not sure she took it down as far as where I had it. Also, Scott may well have raised it again. Since I wasn't using it, nobody had a reason to track it. I didn't think about it possibly having been changed because I don't fiddle with things like that unless I'm sure I can put them back exactly the way they were.

I mean, someone had a reason to configure things that way, and it probably had to do with not hurting themselves. I should have remembered that that approach isn't a normal human expectation. It comes with experience, both of doing a vast amount of typing over decades and of living in a body that injures easily.

I'd go back to working in the bedroom, but, now that Scott is back on first shift, I can either work in the bedroom and stop when he needs to sleep at 10 p.m. or work in the living room and sleep as my body seems to prefer. Carrying the laptop back and forth is a thing I desperately want to avoid because I don't do so well with carrying things now. I don't want to drop my laptop.

We're still waiting for the replacement laptop that Scott ordered for me. It's a little fraught because we don't actually know whether or not it will be feasible for me to use it. Mostly, I'm concerned that it's not as wide as my current model and may not accommodate my hands and wrists properly, let alone my hands and wrists with the heavy braces.

I'm not sure what we do if it won't work because we can't find anything as wide or as robust as my current laptop. We've been coaxing this one along for quite a while because Apple wasn't making anything that would be better for me.
