Notes: I used Chose Not To Warn because I am entirely sure there's stuff in here that needs a warning but felt the story didn't actually fit the standard ones.
This is part 17 of The House of Sulfur and Mercury Series. I don't recommend it as a starting point (for one thing, it will make little sense without knowing who Ariyus is). Also, all of the nastiness from the darker branches of that is in the background of this story. I wrote it for Battleship 2021 for Gammarad who beta reads the series.
I posted it as part of the series which made the series disappear from my public facing AO3 until reveals. I was surprised by that, especially as the series could still be found from my works in the series which still appeared as mine. Who knows what AO3 does? At any rate, if you had noticed that the series was anonymous for a little while, that was why. I didn't think it likely that anyone would be bothered, so I left it all as it was.
Summary: I was paying attention to the wrong things when it happened. Part of it was that Merlin was with Luke. I knew how that went, and frankly, I've never really understood why Merlin was so fascinated by the reactions he could get from Luke. There weren't any surprises there.
This is not how Ariyus would tell this story.
