Labyrinth - I watched this several times as I worked on my Not Prime Time story. I remember it being creepier, weirder and more magical. I suspect that my finding it less so this time has more to do with how the special effects have aged than with anything else. I occasionally found myself thinking that they'd do things very differently if they made the movie now. Then again, maybe they wouldn't so much-- What's the point of working with Henson if you're not going to use lots and lots of puppets? I couldn't get Cordelia interested in watching this with me (she thought the premise sounded too scary). Scott had seen it decades ago and promptly forgotten all the details. He watched about half of it with me, but we never had time to go back and finish it.

Law of Ueki 1-8 - I started this anime because I've read a decent chunk of the manga and because Netflix has (or had. I haven't checked recently) all of it. It's a long series and, so far, moves pretty slowly. I mean, there's a fight in each episode, but that doesn't make me feel that the story is moving along. This is a fighting series-- Individuals from a supernatural realm are selecting teenagers to act as their proxies in a competition to become king. Each teenager gets a single power, and they battle each other until one loses consciousness. There are other rules, some of which put the competing teens at risk of death. Ueki, the main character, asks for the ability to turn trash into trees.

Men in Black 3 - As Scott said, this was better than we expected from a movie with a three in the title. I think one could watch this one without having seen the the previous two movies. The time travel plot made sense except for the necessary bit about J remembering the original time line after it had been changed. The actor who played the younger K did a great job. I could believe him as the younger version of Tommy Lee Jones. There was a memorable alien with precognition who's giving me some ideas for how that might work when I write.

Murder Must Advertise - Ian Carmichael really is wrong as Lord Peter. I mean, he seemed to have the mannerisms down. He just looked wrong, and I never got past that. Comparing this to the book, I rather missed all of the advertising slogans and campaigns. They added a level of absurdity to the book that I loved, and there's really no way to work them into this adaptation. It took me a little bit to realize why I recognized the actor playing Tallboy. It's Paul Darrow, and I recognized him from the bits and pieces of Blake's 7 that I've seen.

Powerpuff Girls - Cordelia got these from Netflix. I think we all got a little sick of the show because the shortest DVD was over four hours long (the longest was more than six). That's a lot of Powerpuff Girls all at once. I still can't remember which of the girls is which in terms of names, but I think I got down some personality traits of each girl. I appreciated the humor of the series and the fact that it didn't take itself too seriously.

Rise of the Guardians - I liked this better than I expected to. The various guardians had distinct personalities. I liked all of them. I don't necessarily expect to like the movies that I get for us to watch as a family (Cordelia's still reluctant to watch most adult movies), but I did enjoy this one. Now I'm curious to take a look at the series of books it's based on. The library has them, so I'll get around to them eventually.

Rise of the Guardians was a surprisingly good movie! We've read the first book - Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King - and it was delightful. Though technically a kids' book, it's a great read for any age - utterly engaging, with strong characters and none of that "talking down to the kids" stuff.

We're really into young-adult books here, as they're often much better written than the "grown-up" novels. In fact, we should really start blogging what we've read...(we do from time to time, but nothing organized or useful for other folks to find book recs).

(And, we need to get back into commenting to folks and blogging - life took a few bites out of us, and we're having trouble getting back online with any regularity. We've missed it.)
