After seeing her younger cousin reading it, Cordelia has decided that she wants to read The Hunger Games. I've avoided that one because it sounds tailor made to set off my anxiety in ways I wouldn't enjoy. I've read spoilers about it, though. Now I'm wondering if I should read it just to know what Cordelia's getting into. I don't know.

It was really pretty tastefully handled.

That's a tough call. It's a really gripping read, but I found parts of very stressful (most notably, the death of Rue, and the sequence at the end, which the movie toned down significantly.) I understand your reluctance and the simultaneous urge to do it. If it's any help, I don't think you'd be wasting your time; it's reasonably well-written, and Katniss' voice is very compelling throughout.

Hmm... I just realized the above may not actually be that helpful. But if/when Rowan decides he wants to read Battle Royale or something similar, I'll have to make the same decision, so I'm curious what you'll decide to do.

As far as I know, the first book is okay (in terms of story), though the setup does seem really manipulative and designed to make people anxious, given who is playing in the Hunger Games and the rules for "winning"), but the second and third are truly not so good. Whatever agency K. gets in story one is undermined totally in books two and three (particularly three). I read one, which was not my thing at all, but I refuse to read two and three, after R's spirited takedown of what happened.
