Scott's already talking to Cordelia about Halloween costumes. He found a website (through Kickstarter, I believe) called Take Back Halloween that focuses on costumes that aren't the skimpy, sexualized stuff that one tends to find in stores. Cordelia picked out a costume idea she liked, Amaterasu, and Scott started trying to find the pieces that she'd need at a price we can afford. He really enjoys the process.

Cordelia's now not so sure this is what she wants. She wants something elaborate without doing a lot of work. I think Scott's enthusiasm embarrasses her somehow. It's like the year Scott made a Toph costume for her. She liked the idea until she saw how much work he was doing. Then she wanted to change her mind.

I dont think I realized that your Cordelia was an Okami fan, too! (Or does she know Amaterasu from some other context?)

She knows Amaterasu from a short graphic novel her father bought her a couple of months ago. Our local library had a comics festival, and the writer of the volume (I think it was the writer and not the artist) was selling copies. It was part of a series about heroes and folktales from a variety of cultures. We got Amaterasu's book and one of a story from China because we knew very little about them.

That website is all kinds of fantastic! I'm so glad you shared the link. Now I'm super-tempted to create a Jane Austen costume. :D

FWIW, for a few years, I had the same feelings that Cordelia did. I would suggest something ambitious and my Mom (who did not like sewing) would explain what it would take, and then I would back off. It sounds like Scott is perfectly willing to do the work, but maybe Cordelia feels like she's asking too much?

Scott actively wants to do the work. He thinks it's fun.

I think Cordelia is afraid of not fitting in, of having a costume that's too far from standard. Last year, Scott figured out that what Cordelia really wanted from her costume was to look pretty. We got an off the rack costume and supplemented it with stuff we had around. We don't know what Cordelia wants this year. She needs to decide soon because putting together a costume takes time (which Scott has little of in September and October due to work overtime).

It's been a few years since I shopped for costumes on eBay, so this may not be current info, but, if you are persistent about bidding on one thing after another and about letting them go and trying something else if the bidding gets too high, you can usually find really nice costumes for not too much work, at really low prices. Maybe that would work?

I'll suggest the idea to Scott, but I think he really likes pulling together lots of little bits to build a cool costume. Maybe he can find some of those bits and pieces on eBay.
