Feb. 19th, 2012 09:32 pmOn Friday the 10th, Delia's school had its winter carnival. Delia's starting to age out of most of the games. She played fewer of them this year, collected fewer prizes. She did the lollipop tree three times, getting three suckers. I have no idea how many times she did the cake walk, but she won five times. We brought a lot of cupcakes home that night.
I volunteered for half an hour, from 7:00 to 7:30. I ran Digging for Gold. There were two buckets of sunflower seeds with painted pennies mixed in. The kids had the count of five to find as many pennies as they could. Younger kids needed two pennies to get the higher tier prize. Older kids needed three. The lower tier prizes were entirely bouncy balls. The higher tier prizes varied. I almost ran out of them, but the woman in charge of events brought more by.
That night, Scott's Babylon 5 game ran for the first time in quite a while. We've had to shift things around due to Delia's indoor soccer practice. This session ran two players short (and I arrived late). Our ship answered a distress call, and our characters are breaking into another ship to rescue the crew from terrorists. We stopped in the middle of things, so I'm looking forward to this Wednesday's session.
We had snow for a couple of days. It wasn't very deep, and it's all gone now, but it briefly felt like February. Delia is really regretting not getting to go sledding this winter, especially after seeing a video of her cousin in Seattle gleefully sledding.
Delia's soccer team lost both of their most recent two games. One reason for that is that the teams combine third and fourth graders. Delia's team is mostly (if not all) third graders. Judging by size, the other teams have a lot more fourth graders.
Delia wants to drop out of Estimania. I got her to keep going one more week by having her and the fourth grader play around with water, estimating volume in milliliters. Unfortunately, we need to start doing some real problems, stuff with lots of math that she'll find less fun. Scott and I don't want to let her drop the event, but forcing her to do it seems like a bad idea.
We've finished reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with Delia. I'm grateful because I have real problems with that book-- the character of Umbridge pushes a lot of negative buttons for me. We got the movie from the library. We've started the next book and have gotten about halfway through it already.
Scott has taken this week as vacation. Delia's on break. We don't have many definite plans yet. Scott has a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning. Delia will be having a couple of friends over on Tuesday. Wednesday evening, Scott's Babylon 5 game meets. The 24th is Scott's birthday, so we'll definitely do something special then, and I'll be baking a cake on Wednesday.
