Scott had all of last week off. He was fortunately enough to get both weekends to go with the weekdays off, so Delia and I had him for nine whole days. Delia was on break from school, too. With Scott around, she got less bored than she normally would.

While on vacation, Scott put spackle over the several cosmetic cracks in our walls. The spackle still needs to be sanded, and everything needs to be painted, but the cracks aren't cracks any more.

On Monday, Delia and I tackled her bookshelves. They were overflowing with things she never reads and doesn't plan to read. We culled about five bags worth of books from four different bookshelves and rearrange the books that were left. We freed up a shelf to use for storing her games. The books we no longer want will mostly go to Delia's school's used book sale. They have that every spring and are currently collecting books for it.

Delia did surprise me with some of the things she wanted to keep. She never, for example, looks at her I Spy books, but she was adamant about keeping them.

On Tuesday, Delia had three friends over for about three hours in the afternoon. I wasn't sure four girls would have space to play in our house, but they seem to have gotten along fine. They tried playing Clue. I'm not sure if they actually finished the game. From what I overheard, there was a little uncertainty about the rules.

On Wednesday, we went out about eleven so that I could buy new shoes. My old pair of loafers is wearing out on the bottom of one shoe, and I want to have the new pair on hand when it finally wears through (or I decide that the worn spot is encouraging me to walk badly. It's right under the ball of my foot). I buy SAS pretty much exclusively, so there's one particular shoe store we go to. I could probably get away with different shoes now that I'm not spending so much time on my feet, but I like SAS. They do good things for my feet.

While I was getting my shoes (I had to place an order because the store doesn't actually carry the exact style I wear. They'll ship the shoes to me for free), Scott and Delia went to a nearby toy store to shop for a birthday present for one of Delia's friends. They had some trouble because a lot of what was in the store was too young for a nine year old. They eventually settled on a couple of art project/drawing pad type things.

Then Scott went to look at shoes while Delia and I went into Nicola's Books. Scott found out that he's been buying himself the wrong size of shoe for years (off by two sizes), and Delia and I picked up several books. Delia claims that she's now okay with bad things happening to parents in books, so I grabbed the first Percy Jackson book to try with her. She's almost done with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. We have to think about what to read with her after she finishes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Percy Jackson is a good bet to try because one of her cousins (a younger cousin) loves the books and has read them all.

After that, we had lunch at a Chinese buffet. Delia tried a lot of things but didn't finish most of it. I was disappointed by the fruit on the buffet. Usually, that's something Delia will eat, but this was all faded and, according to Delia, tasted funny.

When we got home, I baked a cake for Scott. His birthday was coming up, and we were going to have guests that night for Scott's Babylon 5 game. It made more sense to have the cake on Wednesday, when we could share it with other people, than to wait until Friday and have more than the three of us could eat.

Scott had hoped to take Delia swimming on Thursday, but when we investigated, none of the pools in the area had good open swim hours. Instead, we took Delia to Target and let her do a little shopping. She needs short sleeved shirts because the ones she's got have been through two or three summers with her already. They're getting short. She's got some that aren't short but that she simply refuses to wear. This was an opportunity to get a couple of shirts that we know she'll wear. We also got her some pretty knee socks. She bought an Ivy and Bean book and a bag of candy with her allowance money.

Friday, Scott took Delia and one of her friends swimming at the county recreation center. They spent a bit more than two hours in spite of the fact that the pool was cold. From what Scott says, the girls had a grand time. I have the impression that Scott enjoyed himself, too.

Friday was Scott's birthday, so we went out to dinner at Red Lobster. We all enjoyed our meals, but unfortunately, something was off about Scott's food. We don't know if it was beef contamination or what, but he spent most of the night in the bathroom and spent a good chunk of Saturday working hard to keep water down. It's getting so that I worry every time we eat out. Scott doesn't get sick every time, but our list of places we can safely eat keeps getting shorter and shorter.

Sunday, Scott was better. He did the grocery shopping (normally done on Fridays) and visited the library. I had fewer books to return this time than I normally would. Somehow, I did very little reading last week. I started several books but kept hitting points where continuing would take effort. I simply didn't want to make an effort last week.

I managed to bite my tongue in a bad spot. It's in the back, near my very back molar. It hurts when I chew and even more when I swallow. I think I'm going to be very picky about what I eat for a few days, until it stops hurting.
