There was no softball practice on Sunday because the coach hadn't reserved the field. Given that Scott was working, we were rather relieved not to have to rush to get to practice. If there'd been practice, he probably wouldn't have gotten dinner until afterward.

The softball coach's wife made arrangements to get field time Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. She gave Delia a ride. Otherwise, the girl couldn't have gone. Delia did seem to enjoy the practices. I think she liked not having the coach there (he was working and couldn't attend). The coach's wife is better about being encouraging.

On Monday, Delia and I went into town to go to the library. She'd finished her summer reading challenge by reading ten books and wanted to get her prize, a free book. She chose The Name of this Book Is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch. It took her a while to pick it out. Most of the books were either too young for her or too old for her, and a lot of the books at the right level were third or sixth volumes in various series that she's not familiar with.

I found the trip into town unexpectedly exhausting. All I could do on getting home was to lie down and rest. Fortunately, Delia let me. Sometimes, she won't.

Scott's Babylon 5 game met on Wednesday. He did some interesting things for a couple of characters, things that will have repercussions far down the road.

Something Scott ate Wednesday evening gave him an allergic reaction. We've been wracking our brains, trying to figure out what. The chances for beef contamination were very limited-- The only thing I can think of is the shared veggie tray that someone brought. A couple of people brought beef containing sandwiches and may have then touched the veggie tray. That seems really unlikely as a vector, though.

Scott's hands swelled and itched, and he had a lot of nausea. Benedryl helped the swelling and itching, but the nausea was bad enough that he couldn't go to work the next day. He slept till noon on Thursday and didn't eat anything for a few hours after that. When he did, he stuck to saltines and ramen noodles.

Fortunately, he was well enough to drive us all to the softball game. We sat through the game together. Delia batted five times and hit four times. She didn't make any runs. She managed to tag somebody out when she was playing third base. She was very proud of that.

After the game, the whole team went to Baskin Robbins. Scott even dared a frozen yougurt. While we were there, a family we know came in. The father of that family is the usual coach for basketball, so we asked about that. The wife is thinking to coach volleyball during the normal basketball season. Apparently, fourth graders have two basketball seasons, so they'll probably coach basketball during the second season. That will leave Delia choosing between basketball and indoor soccer. I don't see a way to have her do both. They did urge us to sign Delia up for volleyball. The practices would probably be at her school, so it's a possibility. If we sign her up for the first basketball season, the practices will likely be elsewhere.

We didn't do much of anything today. I opened up the document for chapter 20 of "Rheotaxis." I'll read it by the end of the evening. I have to try to figure out how to go forward with it. I need to figure out where to insert physical descriptions of the two new characters I've introduced, and I need to figure out how to write the scene I'm currently stuck on. I've been mentally poking at it for months, even while working on other things, and I'm not feeling sure I can pull it off. My ability to write anything even bordering on explicit seems to have evaporated some time around when Delia learned to read (I wouldn't be surprised if there's a connection there. I really wouldn't). I need to get past that block in order to finish "Rheotaxis." I don't think, given the themes and plot, that I can complete it without writing sex, and I'm not willing to give up on the story. I promised myself, years ago, that I would finish it, and I still intend to.

If nothing else, I have to finish "Rheotaxis" so that I can go on to the other epic fics that I have brewing in my head. There's a Rurouni Kenshin fic (I need to review canon), a Harry Potter fic and a couple of other Weiss Kreuz fics. Of course, all of these short stories I'm writing don't help with the epic projects. I don't seem to be able to write quickly or to work on two things at once (It would help if I could use all of the procrastination time for one project working on another). I need to find a way to need less sleep so that I can write more regularly while Delia's at school. I end up napping most days.
