(no subject)

I'm still waiting to hear what my Fic Corner assignment will be. Looking at the sign up summary, I know which of the fandoms I offered were requested, so I have some idea what I might get. The moderator keeps posting to the community saying that there are delays in getting assignments put together. I'm surprised the moderator has bothered. Assignments aren't late going out yet, and I figure that a couple of days more or less doesn't matter. The fic due date is in mid-September. I mainly want to know what I'm writing so that I can take the book(s) with me when I travel with my sister, and I have until Sunday for that.

The more I think about chapter 24 of Rheotaxis, the more nervous I become. I've avoided heavy world building so far in the story, but it's necessary now. I've named the four worlds involved, but I haven't thought about the cultures on those worlds (except to know that there are many). I've established a few things about the ruling culture but only those things I absolutely needed for the story I was telling. I know a few other things, just not much.

Anybody have any suggestions for good world building tools for writers or game masters? I'm sure such things must exist, but I have no idea where to begin looking for them.

Our cleaning lady is here right now. As I do every week, I wonder why she sweeps then mops then vacuums. Wouldn't it make more sense to vacuum before mopping? And instead of sweeping?

In the not too distant future, I need to ask our cleaning lady if she's willing to teach Cordelia how to change her own sheets (the cleaning lady does them now. The fact that I physically couldn't change the sheets in Cordelia's crib was the reason we hired the cleaning lady to begin with). I'd be happy to pay extra, and we'd still have two hours of work a week for her without the sheets. Right now, she consistently works about fifteen minutes more than two hours but won't let me pay her for the extra time because, she says, we're like family.
