I'm on the edge between being tired enough to justify a nap and awake enough that it doesn't make sense to lie down. I think the coffee I drank is helping. I need to decide one way or the other. I have a bagel I'd like to eat, and I can't do that if I'm going to lie down.

Last night's winter carnival was kind of chaotic. They didn't get nearly enough volunteers, so I worked the entire evening. It started right after I bought Cordelia's tickets. I saw that the lollipop tree was sitting in the hallway with no one supervising it. That seemed like a bad idea-- It's so easy for passing kids to pluck lollipops as they walk by. So I spent the first half hour on the lollipop tree.

Nobody ran bingo from 6:00-6:30. I was scheduled to start running it at 6:30. The box of stuff for it was right next to the lollipop tree, and the library was unlocked, so I could go in and set up. I handed off the lollipop tree to Scott and set up the game. I had players through most of the evening except for the last fifteen minutes of the night. I didn't have any prizes to give out, but nobody cared.

I was supposed to go back to the lollipop tree at 7:30, but nobody came to take over running bingo, so I drafted Scott again. He was at loose ends-- Cordelia doesn't want us around during things like this, and there's not much for adults to do except watch the kids and run games. Scott never signs up to run anything because he can't be sure when he'll get to the event.

Cordelia won a plate of blueberry muffins in the cake walk. She had fourteen tickets left at the end of the night, and she decided to use all of them on the lollipop tree. She gave one ticket to a little girl who had no tickets and was looking longingly at the lollipops.

Scott stayed later than Cordelia and I did because he had to wait for the clean up crew to get around to putting away the (very few) extra lollipops. He did encourage people, as they were leaving, to use whatever spare tickets they had to get lollipops. The tree was looking pretty bare by the time Cordelia and I left.

I was hardhearted this morning and abandoned the folks doing bagel Friday to their fate. Cordelia's friend who works every bagel Friday didn't show up (which means either she's sick or her little brother is). Neither of the other two girls wanted to touch the bagels. Both wanted to sell juice. The two enthusiastic third graders who usually show up to help hadn't arrived by the time I left about 8:10. The office staff also hadn't arrived yet, so the cash box was still locked up tight. That meant they could only sell bagels to people who had exact change.

There will most likely be no bubble tea for us this weekend. Yesterday, a water main burst along the block of South University where both Bubble Island and Momo Tea are located. The street was closed the last I heard, and it seems unlikely that businesses along there will be permitted to open until the situation is resolved. They have to stabilize the street and the sidewalk on at least one side of the street.

There have been a lot of water mains breaking this winter. It seems like every week there's another one. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll escape being directly affected. A week ago, there was one not far from here, along Pontiac Trail. It didn't affect us, but it shows that this side of town is not immune. I don't recall this happening in years past, but it might be that I'm more aware of it this year.
