Cordelia has a sore throat. I probably should have made her stay home today, but she was adamant that she wanted to go to school. She’s got school things in the evening tonight and tomorrow, and some of her friends are counting on coming here between school and the events and on us getting them home after. She had enough discomfort last night, however, that she came back out about forty five minutes after turning off her light to demand that we make the pain stop. I’d already given her ibuprofen before bed, so I was at a loss, but Scott dug up some OTC cold medicine that wouldn’t do her any harm and gave her that.

She also told us last night that, all last week while she was having abdominal pain, she had diarrhea. I wanted to bang my head on something. I asked about bowel movements, but I was focused on whether or not she’d had one recently, and it didn’t occur to her to mention that things had changed. I’ll have to remember to ask that specifically. If we’d known, we’d have fed her different foods and probably tried Immodium (it helps Scott).

Scott didn’t realize that we’d have company for dinner both tonight and Friday, so when he shopped on Saturday, he bought a lot of pork. We can’t serve that because our guests are Muslim, and I’m not sure there’s enough time between when Scott gets off work and when the kids need to be back at school for him to shop. We might have enough chicken patties, but we don’t have enough buns. There’s a potato soup mix that should be safe (it does not contain bacon or bacon flavoring), or I could make spinach bean soup. I think we’ve got everything for that. I guess I’ll ask our guests this evening which they’re more likely to eat.

Tonight’s event is the sixth grade orchestra concert. The orchestra teacher has offered the seventh graders a fair sized chunk of extra credit if they show up and play, too. Apparently, the sixth graders don’t like to practice and are pretty thoroughly terrible. They must be really bad for the teacher to go to this extreme because parents expect orchestra, at that level, to be pretty terrible. They’ll be playing three songs, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Jingle Bells, and a third that I’ve forgotten the name of. Cordelia has been heavily discouraging us from attending. She says we can, but that she doesn’t recommend it at all.

Tomorrow’s event is 'middle school fun night.' The school will be open for sixth and seventh graders with some teachers and some parent volunteers. There will be a $5 fee to get in, and some things will cost more money beyond that (pizza and pop and the photobooth, I think). There will be some free food (veggies, popcorn, and bottled water). There will be physical games in the gym, board games in the library, music and a photobooth in the multipurpose room (combines cafeteria and auditorium), and a movie somewhere else in the building. Cordelia says that everyone is predicting that the whole thing will be horribly, horribly dull but that everyone she knows is going.

The only parents allowed in the building will be those who have signed up as volunteers, but we will have to sign kids in and out. Cordelia’s a bit cranky about that because she knows that she could easily walk home on her own, but I don’t think there are more than two or three other kids who could, so I can see why they want to make sure the kids leave with adults. Kids also aren’t allowed to bring cell phones or cameras. I questioned the cell phone policy and was told that it’s to prevent the kids from making and uploading videos of each other. They promised me that kids will have phone access via any one of the adults present in case of illness or other similar emergencies (the flyer wasn’t clear as to whether or not parents were allowed to bring in cell phones).

I got through about half of my to-do list yesterday. I’m hoping to manage more today. The things I didn’t get to were all optional but optional of the I-really-want-to-get-to-this sort. For today, I’ve got five or six things (plus PT) I must do before the cleaning lady comes. One of my optionals on the list also needs to be done before she comes if I’m doing it at all. I have four and a half hours for all of that. I’m trying to decide whether I should start with the thing that will take the most time and energy or knock off the easier things before tackling that. Either may leave me without enough energy to finish the must do list. Maybe retrieve and sort the laundry, shelving some books in the process since I have to go to the basement anyway, and then the big nasty task of washing the roasting pan? (The thing about the roasting pan is that it’s too big for the sink or the dishwasher. The cleaning lady might tackle it if I don’t, but I don’t want her to because we cooked pork in it and she’s Muslim. I don’t know if that would bother her, but it’s something I’m not comfortable asking of her.)
