I slept middling badly last night. By the time Cordelia got home, I wasn’t sleepy. Then, when I was ready to go to bed, Cordelia wanted to spend time with me. We didn’t talk about anything particularly deep, but she’s thirteen, so any time she wants to spend with me, I’m going to grab with both hands. At any rate, that meant that I got to bed about an hour and a half before Scott’s alarm went off at 2:00. Then, when he got to work, they sent him home again, so he came back in at 3:30, and then his alarm went again at 5:00 so that he could go to work and stay for the day. I woke about 8:00 and then fell asleep again until around 10:00.

I’ve texted Scott to ask if he wants to do the grocery pick up thing at Busch’s. The selection there isn’t as good as at Kroger, but if he’s working tomorrow, too, I think we may need to do it. I’ll drop frozen cherries from the list because what Busch’s carries in that direction isn’t something I’m willing to eat. We’ll end up paying a good bit more for Cordelia’s preferred cereal because we normally buy the knock off store brand at Kroger. Busch’s will only have the Kellogg version. Unfortunately, by the time Scott gets back to me about whether or not to do this, it might be too late to get the groceries today.

And Scott just got back to me to say that, no, he’d really rather not do that. I don’t know. It seems like a good idea to me.

After dropping Cordelia off last night, Scott and I stopped at Plum Market. We both got dinner from the salad bar. I looked at the hot bar because I prefer that at Whole Foods, but everything was either spicy or contained other ingredients that would make me sick. I could have the mac and cheese and the chicken tenders, but that didn’t seem like a particularly good meal. We also picked up a day old, half price chocolate cake and an assortment of other things that we thought might be worth trying (I remember polenta and a garlic spread. There were a couple of other things, too. I just don’t remember what they were).

In terms of Ingress, someone came through last night and took out all of the local portals. I’m sort of thinking about going out to take some of them back, but it’s raining, so I really don’t want to. Also, I’ve got something at noon that I want to do.

I’ve realized that 75% of my AU fics suffer from fundamental backstory problems that can kind of be summed up by this cartoon. There’s always a gap where something has to have happened to get the canon to twist the way I want it to, but I don’t have any idea what happened or how to make it fit properly. Generally, I just ignore it and start writing, but eventually, I have to address it if I’m going to show the story to anyone because anyone who knows the canon will point right at that hole and want to know what goes there.

The Rurouni Kenshin AU, for example, actually has two big holes in the backstory that I haven’t figured out how to fill in the last ten years. I’m not sure either is of the sort that I can get past by sleight of hand. I can occasionally do that, but I try not to, and it works better for a very short piece than it does for something longer. Longer works need firmer foundations and give readers a lot more time to realize if I’ve resorted to Potemkin village world building.
