Notes: I've been thinking about how to repair the original story (which doesn't end right due to me having run out of time), and this is what happened instead. I'm pretty sure it's not quite what most people had in mind when they asked for more.
Summary: Kaneri was surprised not to be dead. He didn't expect that the oversight in his status would be long overlooked, but he allowed himself a little time to breathe and think of something other than where it was all likely to end.
The Audari were nothing if not consistent, so Kaneri was certainly going to die, and that death was certainly going to be unpleasant, but he'd known for years that it was coming, eventually.
