Our dishwasher is ten years old. We got it shortly after Cordelia was born. The lower rack has started to corrode. We even had one rod break off entirely. Scott looked into replacing the rack, but it's $200, and ten years is about the expected lifespan for a dishwasher of the type we've got. We're on borrowed time with the dishwasher as a whole, so replacing a part that expensive doesn't make sense. Of course, the dratted thing might surprise us and last years yet. I just hope it doesn't fail catastrophically.

When our dishwasher failed, it just wouldn't drain anymore, so there was a big pool of water inside on the bottom of the dishwasher. I think the motor that is supposed to push it out failed. So, no catastrophe for us. I don't know what other failure modes they have though.

That's reassuring. I have no idea what to expect to fail on our dishwasher, but we can deal with a pool of water in the bottom. It wouldn't be a lot of fun, but we can deal with it.
