After washing, Cordelia's coat and snow pants still smell like smoke. The odor is fainter, but Cordelia very nearly refused to wear her coat today. I don't know if the lingering odor is because I didn't use enough soap or because I washed them on cold (the snow pants said to wash them on cold. The coat could be washed on warm). I may try washing the coat again tonight. I think we can live with the snow pants as they are. Cordelia will wear them only a few times this winter.

Have you tried adding baking soda to your wash water? Sometimes that helps for smells on our clothes.

You're the second person to suggest baking soda. I'm trying it right now. I've got my fingers crossed.

I've had good luck getting strong smells out of my jacket by hanging outside overnight.

I'll consider that if a second washing with baking soda doesn't help. We don't really have a good place to hang things up outside, however, so it would take some creativity. I'd also like to do it on a night when Cordelia doesn't have to go out early the next morning. Putting on a cold coat is unpleasant.

I use Febreeze to get cigarette smoke smell off my jacket - and then hang it outside for a while to get the Febreeze smell to go away.

Washing with a pre-soak and baking soda worked. I'll keep Febreeze in mind for next time.

I'm no expert, but maybe a soak is required? The smoke is probably deeper than the surface.

I'll try a pre-soak tonight. I'm pretty sure our washing machine has that option.

I hate when odors linger in clothes. It was especially hard for me when I couldn't soak clothes in the washing machine (because I had to share the thing with the whole apartment building.) If your machine doesn't have a programmed "soak" cycle, you can probably just hit "pause" or open the lid after the machine fills with water.

It might also help to add some baking soda to the wash water. If it's a regular washing machine. Half a cup or a cup. Good luck.
