the_rckI just ordered two shot glasses from the local university's shop to be delivered to my soon to be seven year old nephew. He collects shot glasses. My sister, his mother, couldn't think of anything else that he'd want or need. He's the only grandchild on the other side of the family and so gets pretty much any toy he even thinks of wanting. He collects shot glasses. I got him one with our city's name on it and one with the university's name and logo. I hope he likes them.
The queries I did in searching for these told me that the cheapest way to do this would be to visit secondhand stores, but I don't know when we'd be able to do that, and we'd still have to ship them. This way, I know I've got something, and they're taking care of the packing and shipping for me. The glasses might even arrive before my nephew's birthday.
I thought about books, but he's at a difficult age for reading (almost able to read on his own but not quite and wanting chapter books) and owns all the books in series he's really into. I could have bought him a sampler of things like the Magic Tree House books, I suppose. It's just that the only series he really loves are the Captain Underpants books, of which he owns all the books, and the Geronimo Stilton books, of which he owns some unspecified volumes. I don't know of anything else quite like either of those series. My best source of information about books at that level is Cordelia's school library, and those two series are unique there.
