I just called to cancel my eye exam for tomorrow. They're predicting wind chills of -27 F, and if that happens, there won't be school, and I'll have three kids to look after. There's no good way I could get the four of us to and from the clinic. If it's too cold for them to be walking to school/waiting outside for the bus, it's too cold for them to wait for the city bus with me.

The eye exam isn't urgent. I haven't had one for about three years, but I don't generally use my glasses. I wear them mainly for Cordelia's sporting events. I like to be able to identify the girls as they play, so I need my glasses. (I can generally identify Cordelia even without my glasses.) I am starting to head toward needing reading glasses-- I can't read really small print, things like the dates on coins, but I haven't yet hit a book I can't read, and I spend most of my time at my laptop. Reading at that distance is still quite easy. I can also read the closed captioning on the TV without my glasses. Mostly, when the TV looks blurry, it's because the picture we're getting is blurry and not because I'm not wearing glasses.

The main reason to have an eye exam is to get checked for glaucoma. My grandfather is blind from it (he refused to take medication for it. Now it's too late). I'm unlikely to have problems with it yet, but it's good to check. I ought to be doing it every year.
