The school district has announced plans for changes to Cordelia's current school. They plan to turn it into a K-8 school with an emphasis on STEAM areas (science, technology, engineering, art and math). The change will start next fall, as Cordelia enters 6th grade. It means that she could conceivably stay at her current school instead of taking the bus to the big middle school. I'm not sure that would be the right choice for her, but it's certainly an option we want to look at.

Of course, I have no idea how hard it will be to get into the school under this new program. The article I read implied that those in the current attendance area will be given priority, but I'm not really clear on that, and it may only apply at lower grade levels. Cordelia's school is currently operating at 35% of its maximum capacity, so it's not surprising that they'd consider changing it before they'd consider putting such a program at more heavily populated schools. (Our school area used to include several complexes of graduate student family housing, but the university has been doing away with those complexes as fewer grad students bring families with them.)

Scott and I also aren't sure that this sort of program would be what Cordelia wants. If she knows it's at her current school, she'll definitely want to do it because she doesn't like change and is afraid of starting middle school. We're thinking to talk to her about it as something we could do without telling her where it would be. We would love to see Cordelia get into STEM stuff, but she's had her heart set on teaching since she was in kindergarten. She hasn't wavered. She may not see the point (though I will point out that knowing STEM fields is very useful for a teacher).

Math teachers are one of the few that are still actually in demand, also. Though I'm confused how "art" fits into the STEM categories
