the_rckI ventured outside to take out the trash. I should have put my boots on. There's enough snow on the walk that it went up over my shoes to my ankles. Scott's going to have to clear the walks when he gets home from work. He meant to do it yesterday, but he ran out of time. I suppose it's just as well. We've gotten enough new snow that he'd have to do it today anyway.
Cordelia has started letting me sleep in until ten on mornings when we don't have to be up early. It used to be that she'd get me up at nine. I like the extra time to sleep, but I'm not sure it's a good thing. On weekends, I like to wake slowly instead of catapulting out of bed the way I do on school days. Lounging until nine fifteen or nine thirty is different than doing the same until ten fifteen or ten thirty. I've usually got things I need to do, and I take medication right on getting up. The hour makes a difference.
Usually, January is a slow time for Scott's work, but this one hasn't been. People have been wanting bottled water which means Scott's company has to make more bottles. I think they've worked every weekend since Christmas.
Scott has been exploring a new game system called Fate. He's very enthusiastic about it and says it's what GURPS ought to have been. He and I worked a little bit on converting my Babylon 5 character to Fate. We only did her to the starting level, and there were a lot of things I lost in the process. We use d20 for Babylon 5, and Emma is a 7th level ranger and a 1st level worker. She's got some neat things from being 7th level, things that don't translate over to Fate.
There's also the difficulty that the Fate skill set doesn't fit a science fiction setting. Scott says it was designed for low fantasy. As far as I can tell, there's no magic system, so converting the technomage characters would be difficult. The telepath in our group would also be difficult. Scott doesn't want to create new skills if he can avoid it, but I think he's going to have to.
I don't think he's seriously thinking of converting his B5 game to Fate. He'd run into some serious opposition from the players, for one thing. Scott's just so excited about this game system that he can't stop talking about how great it is.
