Feb. 2nd, 2014 09:58 pmScott had the first practice for his Science Olympiad team this afternoon. He's coaching To Infinity and Beyond which is astronomy focused. His team consists of two fourth graders. There were supposed to be two fifth graders, too, but the events Cordelia and her friend were signed up for conflict on the day of the Olympiad, and the girls chose to do Disease Detectives instead.
It feels a little weird because, in previous years, we held practices here, around our dining room table. Even when Scott coached Circuit Wizardry last year, I was at least peripherally involved (in the years before that, I was the coach. I did a pretty poor job of it because I had no idea what I was doing). This year, Scott's running his practices at the nearest library branch. I don't know what he'll do when he gets to the point of wanting to use the projector to show the kids the constellations. I don't think there's a good space for that at Traverwood. (I don't think there's a good space for that at the downtown library, either).
Cordelia chose to go to the practice because she's interested in learning the material. She didn't want Scott to print handouts for her, but she wanted to be at the practice. I think she's torn between being interested and not wanting to commit to extra work.
Disease Detectives this year is focusing on environmental issues. Last year, it was food borne illnesses. The coach hasn't gotten in touch with us yet about setting up a practice time. I'm wondering if I ought to e-mail him to ask what's up. He's a doctor, so his availability will be limited, but that only means that they ought to start practicing sooner.
We had about an hour between To Infinity and Beyond practice and the monthly Girl Scouts meeting. During that time, our DSL went out, and I gave my laptop to Scott. He took my hard drive and moved it into the shell of his old laptop. He plans to take the hard drive from that and mount it somehow so that he can access it from his current machine. The new machine is taking a little getting used to-- My old laptop shell was white; this one is black. It's minor, but nothing looks right yet.
The Girl Scout meeting was more than a little frustrating. One of the leaders has just hit the miserable part of a cold (and all she had to take to alleviate the symptoms was children's Tylenol). The other leader had smashed her shoulder while sledding and was in a fair amount of pain.
We talked a lot about the cookie booth on the 14th. We have to guess how many boxes of cookies we can sell, and we'll have to pay for any we fail to sell. The girls decided to make little crafty thingies to give to people who buy cookies. Cordelia's working on finger crocheting bracelets. She hasn't quite got the length down yet. We don't know whether the cookie booth will be inside or outside. I definitely want to know that. It makes a difference in terms of how Cordelia and I dress.
We also talked about the winter cookout outing. We went over what each girl is supposed to bring, and we talked about places where we might do it. The plans are still kind of squishy for my taste.
The girls spent the last twenty minutes making posters for the cookie booth. They divided up into three groups because there were three pieces of poster board.
I came very near to falling a couple of times on the walk home (Scott drove us over, so I don't know what the sidewalks were like then). Everything is really icy. Cordelia wanted to run home, but the sidewalks were too treacherous for her.
As soon as we got home, Cordelia announced that she needed one of us to make up a practice test for her so that she could prepare for her math test tomorrow. She hadn't thought to tell us before then. Scott grumped at her, but he did some searching around online after looking at the review test she did in school on Friday and came up with several sheets of problems for her.
I've reached 9th level in HabitRPG. I'm still working out how to use it best. I do more with the to-do list than with anything else. The stuff I've got listed under Habits is all stuff I don't necessarily do regularly but want to.
I'm thinking that I need to try to write something other than chapter 24. I can't seem to shake that one loose, and not writing is painful. I feel like I'm going back on my promise to myself, but I need to write something. Right now, I'm thinking to take one of the short stories that I've got partially written and work on that. I'll pick away at the start of chapter 24 during breaks and hope that I can get past whatever's holding me up.
