We talked to the guy from Hanson's about new aluminum siding. I wish we could afford it. The current siding is ugly, and what they sell has built in insulation which we need. But I don't think we can justify $10,000 for what's basically a cosmetic thing. Maybe if I win the Publishers Clearing House. Well, almost certainly if I win the Publishers Clearing House. That and renovating the kitchen.

It's so nice out that I feel like we should do something out of the house. We just don't have any ideas. Cordelia's dress shopping needs to wait until Friday (when ice on the roads may make the trip impossible) because that's when her friend will be available. I hope we can find something not too expensive that will look good on both girls. I think the black and white Cordelia's interested in will suit both girls, but I'm bad at judging that sort of thing until I see somebody actually wearing the clothes in question.

Instead of going out, Scott's been working on the taxes (which do need to be done), and now he and Cordelia are playing the Marvel Lego game.

We have to be kind of creative when it comes to dinner the next few days. Last night, we experimented with a Chinese barbecue powder on our chicken. Scott was the only one who liked it, but we have three days more of it. I wondered whether the experiment would be wise-- The primary spice ingredient was 'five spice,' and I wasn't sure what was in that. That's the bad part about experimenting. We cook enough for several meals. If we don't like it, we're stuck with it. Scott thinks we can make pizza with it, but that only prolongs the misery. We'll use very little chicken making pizza and still be left with three more days of food Cordelia and I don't want to eat.

Five spice is usually a blend of pepper, cinnamon, star anise, cloves and fennel - as you can imagine, the precise balance of the blend can vary a lot, and the ingredients may lose their flavour at different rates when stored so it might not be a consistent flavour.

That's probably the fennel flavour. I swear things like licorice and fennel will survive the apocolypse!

Five spice is cinnamon, clove, anise, pepper, and... uhm... something else seed-y, I forget. We use it a lot, most frequently in a sort of adaptation of Peking duck to BBQ chicken. And, y'know, sometimes for actual Peking duck. :)

's funny, I don't like anise either -- I despise licorice and anything like it, and can barely deal with the smell -- but I find five spice yummy. Maybe because I can't taste the anise for the rest of it.
