Feb. 27th, 2014 07:24 pmIt was actually cold at the school library today. Usually, it's a bit too warm, so this was quite a change. If I'd known it would be that chilly, I'd have worn a sweater. I got all the shelving done pretty quickly. There wasn't much non-fiction, and that's what takes the longest. The second graders, when they brought their books back, left them outside the library door. It's just sheer chance that I saw them do it and brought the books inside to check them in.
I can manage to get myself depressed, watching the kids. I find myself wondering which of them are hungry. Kids can purchase breakfast at school, and it's free for kids who get free lunches. In practice, though, the kids have very little time to get breakfast, especially if they come by bus. I just keep thinking that some of these kids have to be. This is a school with a fair number of poor families, and they say it's something like one in four kids that is 'food insecure.'
I also look at the boys horsing around, all of them black boys, and wonder about their future. The world is stacked against them. I've watched these kids for years, and I want them to do well. The librarian is trying to teach them skills they'll need and to encourage them to enjoy reading, but they're kids. They don't realize that it's important.
