Last night's book fair was really, really slow. We were hoping to do at least $1000 in business, but I don't think we managed even half of that. It's too bad because the more stuff sells, the higher the percentage of the take the school gets. I think we'll be stuck at the lowest tier this year. That's still better than nothing, but it would have been nice to get more.

In a way, I'm glad it was slow. The process of checking people out was cumbersome. I had to use a finicky computer program, and I think I did all the cash transactions wrong. I hope it doesn't matter.

Cordelia did decide that she wanted two more books (the first time we went, she wanted only one book, a book on Greek mythology). She got the first book in two different series-- Conspiracy 365 (which has a book for every month of the year and has started up a sequel series) and The Last Thirteen (which has thirteen volumes. I don't think all of them are out yet). Both series are heavy action conspiracy stories. Cordelia isn't sure she'll like them. She thinks they may be too frenetic for her. Still, she's trying something new. I like that.

The Greek mythology reference inspires me to throw out "D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths" which I read when I was maybe 10 and which still holds my interest decades later. It's one of the eternal classic children's books with fabulous color illustrations throughout and it is one of those always-in-print titles. If C. has not encountered it, and still has any interest in mythology, it is Most Highly Recommended. Which mythology title did she get already?

As for the conspiracy stories: maybe every generation of young people needs their own finely-attuned trash literature. :-) For me it was the Tom Swift Jr. series.

From my childhood, Tom Swift Jr. was pretty much non-stop action, with giant airplanes and repelatron rays and submarines and sky highways through the jungle. I remember when I came to the realization, after reading about two dozen of these, that Tom got knocked unconscious in every single book! It was part of the formula!! (Tom must have developed one heck of a concussion problem.)
