Last night, Cordelia and I went with [livejournal.com profile] evalerie and her daughter to a getting acquainted meeting of the cadette troop that the daughter belongs to. There were four or five juniors there to meet the troop and see if they might want to join in the fall. There are several activities over the summer that are also intended for bridging juniors to get to know the troop.

The girls played games and had popsicles. It was raining lightly during most of the meeting, so we didn't go to the playground as had been planned. The girls did go outside for a brief game of capture the flag when the rain let up.

Cordelia went back and forth between enjoying herself and wanting to leave. She only knew one girl present ([livejournal.com profile] cherydactyl's younger daughter who is also currently a junior). There was a girl present who is almost certainly coming to Northside in the fall. Her parents were pleased to have her meet Cordelia so that she'll know another sixth grader there.

Cordelia does feel that, if there's a Northside troop, she'd rather do that because she'll know more of the girls. I'm not so sure-- The troop we visited last night is very active, and the girls get to do a lot of things. From what [livejournal.com profile] evalerie says this troop has had leadership continuity so that people running things know what they're doing. A number of the adults present last night were troop volunteers of some sort. Any troop at Northside would be just starting out and would be run by parents who might not have any experience at all.

The troop you visited has accumulated a ton of leaders over the years -- I think they have five or six official leaders, plus a lot of the moms are retired leaders -- which means that the troop is very well-run and does a *ton* of activities each year. Cathy has "grand-scouts" -- kids in the troop whose moms were also in Cathy's troop many years ago -- which I always think is very neat. I always watch them doing things and wish that I could teleport ideas back into the past to myself when I was leading a Girl Scout troop. :) I love how girl-led the troop is, and how the kids are all supportive and encouraging and welcoming to each other.
