May. 15th, 2014 12:01 pmLast night's outdoor soccer practice was rained out, but the coach has apparently reserved the gym at that school for 7-8 p.m. every Wednesday night until the end of the season, so there was a practice of sorts. Having it start at 7 is better for us because it means dinner isn't so hurried, but ending at 8 meant that it was nearly 10 by the time Cordelia got to bed. She had to shower (and she desperately needed one. She hadn't rinsed the conditioner out of her hair when she showered on Sunday. I couldn't get her to shower again any sooner, though, in spite of how it looked and felt).
We're wondering if there will even be a soccer game this weekend. The ground is soaked, and as long as it is, they won't let the kids use the fields-- too much risk of damage to the fields. It's supposed to keep raining at least through Sunday, so Saturday will be wet. I'd rather have the game, even in the rain, because rescheduling means a two game weekend. Scott's not likely to get many weekends with two days off in the next few months.
I helped out in the school library today. The fifth graders continued working on their comics about bodily systems. They also did an end of year test to see how much they remember about how to use the library and associated topics. The librarian taught the second graders how to use a program called Type to Learn that teaches touch typing. She just wanted them to get a feel for it. She didn't expect them to get far, not this year. In the fall, they'll use Type to Learn or a similar program a lot. Touch typing is one of the big skills they're trying to teach the third and fourth graders (fifth graders are assumed to have mastered it).
I find myself hoping that the current librarian gets hired for the new program in the fall. I like her, and I'm used to her way of doing things. A new librarian would mean a whole new way of checking books out and probably some changes in shelving and such.
I think that, next fall, I'll offer to assist with whichever two classes the librarian most needs help. I like seeing Cordelia's class, but they're old enough to check their books out by themselves, at least they are using the current system. There are other ways of doing it that require an adult's intervention.
