May. 16th, 2014 02:37 pmScott's Babylon 5 game met last night, but we played something different. Scott's really enthusiastic about the FATE system and has been wanting to try it out. The last couple of sessions, we took time to create characters, and last night we started playing. I'm not convinced I like the mechanics, but I'm not sure how much of that is that they're unfamiliar. My character didn't do very much because none of her skills really applied to the situation in which the characters found themselves. I expect it will balance out.
One reason we went to the FATE scenario is that one of our usual players isn't going to be present for a while. It's for a wonderful reason-- He and his wife just got a newborn girl. The adoption won't be finalized until next month, but they've got the baby now. They've been waiting for a child for years. They got effectively no advance notice, just a phone call that there was a baby for them right now.
We're assuming that this player will come back eventually. It's a good thing for each parent to get some time out, child free. It'll just be a while before they're sure enough of what they're doing not to want both of them there as much as possible. And who knows? It might be that a biweekly game is too much. They'll have to find their own balance.
Scott took today as a vacation day because of Cordelia's birthday tomorrow. He's hoping that it will mean that he gets both Saturday and Sunday off. He worked last weekend, so it should mean that. We just don't know.
Cordelia refused to let me come with her and Scott to school this morning. She said that having one of her parents there was terrible enough. Both of us was unbearable. I considered overruling her, but there's really no reason to. She's just heading into adolescence. Parents are embarrassing.
I went with Scott to buy bagels and then get his hair cut. After that, we did the grocery shopping. We bought supplies for Cordelia's party on Sunday. I hope we don't regret buying the ultra cheap ice cream, the stuff that's labeled as 'dairy dessert' rather than ice cream. Tomorrow, we'll have to buy stuff to put in the goody bags. We don't have anything at all yet.
We had lunch at Cafe Marie. We considered staying in and having grilled cheese sandwiches, but we can do that Sunday. We can only go to Cafe Marie when Cordelia's otherwise occupied.
As we were leaving Cafe Marie, Scott's sister called. She has a cold and thinks it's unwise for her to host the family gathering tomorrow. That means we're probably going to eat out, a challenging proposition given food restrictions and preferences. Right now, we're thinking Olive Garden. They do have a (very limited) gluten free menu, and we know that Scott and I can find things there that we can eat. The big question is whether or not they'll let us bring in our gluten free cake. If they won't, we'll have to look for somewhere else to go.
The cold is an issue mostly because Scott's father is due to have heart surgery on Tuesday. We really, really don't want to risk him getting it. Scott's sister is still planning to go down to Cleveland the day of the surgery. Scott's going, too, and his brother and his brother's wife will be there.
Scott's currently out mowing the lawn. It's gotten seriously shaggy in back, and we have ton of baby trees in the lawn out front. I need to spend some time pulling weeds out of the raised beds. I'm just waiting for a day when it's warm enough that I don't need a jacket and when it's not raining.
Scott's making noises about putting away the winter coats. I pointed out to him that I will want mine tomorrow for the soccer game (assuming it doesn't get rained out). Tomorrow, it's supposed to have a high of 56 F, and it's likely to rain. The game's at 10:15. It will be cold.
