I don't know why Cordelia wants me to walk her to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays (cross country days when she goes in an hour early) but not on Mondays or Wednesdays. (Fridays are different. She doesn't want me there, but I go anyway so that I can buy bagels.) Today, it's raining, so she might have wanted me anyway for the umbrella (she won't take an umbrella into the school. I have to walk her there, take her umbrella and go. If it's pouring at the end of the day, I have to trek out to get her).

The concert last night wasn't nearly as bad as I feared. There were some false notes from time to time, but over all, it went pretty well. The program had two parts, one for the winds and one for the strings. The two groups did some of the same songs, but they've never performed together. They have different teachers.

Cordelia's instrumental teacher told us she has the best playing posture of all the kids playing strings. I have no idea if it's true. I think he was trying to find something really good to say about each and every child. He did assure us that there will be instrumental music at Cordelia's school in the fall. He wasn't sure exactly who'd be teaching it or what it would look like, but he was certain it would be there.

They gave out several flyers. One of them talked about renting an instrument for the summer for $50. We might well do that. Cordelia says she's interested and would play at least a couple of times a week (I might have to schedule it, but I could do that). She says that she doesn't want to forget how to play. The potential downside is that she has no idea how to tune a viola. The teacher does that for them twice a week during the school year. She also can't yet read music. We'd have to buy some music for her as the school will need to take back what it's given her so far. We can do that, but I wonder if she'll want to do the work of puzzling out what notes are what.

There was also a flyer for a music camp that I wish we could do-- an hour or two a day, four days a week, for a few weeks. One of the camps is at the local middle school, so it's almost possible. I just think that doing it would damn near kill me. If Cordelia could get there herself, by bus, it would be different, but she can't. She's not ready to.

The last flyer talked about the music program at the middle school and about buying or renting instruments. It didn't say which instruments the school will still provide, just that it would be the large ones, so I'm wondering-- The viola seems to me to be borderline. I mean, it's bigger than a violin, but it's not really all that big. I just remember that, at the middle school orientation, they said the school would provide violas.

The strings teacher definitely said that people should rent stringed instruments rather than buying because the instrument needs to be sized to the child and these children are still growing.

Scott left about six thirty to head to Cleveland with his sister. They took her car, so ours is still sitting in the driveway. It was kind of weird seeing it there when I came back from walking Cordelia to school. Scott and his sister won't have arrived in Cleveland yet; it's a three hour drive. They probably won't arrive until after their father is already in surgery. Scott thinks they're only staying through about three o'clock, too, so I don't know if they'll get to see their father or not. I suppose it depends on how long his surgery takes.

I told Scott that he should feel free to call me while he waits. I don't know if he will or not.

Actually, for a viola player, good posture is an important thing--if you slouch or slump, you don't have the same range that a musician with good posture has. So I don't think that teacher was just saying something nice for the sake of saying something nice.

If you're interested in tuning an instrument, there are several low-cost apps that will let you do this. I'll ask my Dad which one he uses. (He is Mr. App Expert now that he has a fancy new phone!)

I found a free app for tuning a ukulele, which was extremely easy to use considering I'm a wind player and have never tuned a stringed instrument in my life. It plays you the notes you are aiming for for each string or will listen and tell you what note you have tuned your string to so far.
