I'm trying to decide the best way to take my medications with me to fifth grade camp. I don't like to think that any of the kids might steal my meds (and I don't think any of my meds are the sort of thing someone who knew meds would want to steal), but I don't know all the kids well. I know them by name from years of helping in the library, but I only know what I've observed there which has more to do with what books they like to read (or that they don't like to read) than with anything else.

I'm thinking that I'll take just enough of each kind of pill to get me from dinner on Wednesday to lunch on Friday. I won't leave home until about three on Wednesday, and I should be home by lunch on Friday unless, for some reason, the woman giving me a ride wants to hang around camp that morning. The kids will be busy, so I don't think there's much point in staying. If I take just enough of each, I can keep them in my purse and keep my purse with me all the time.

I think I'll leave the vitamins home. That'll leave me with seven medications (eight if I count my emergency migraine medicine) to manage. I think, if I can find the others, I can use two daily pill thingies to hold what I'm taking. I can't divide the meds up by when I take them because each pill thing has four compartments while I take meds six times a day. Instead, I can use each compartment for a particular medication. The compartments should be big enough to hold what I need, and the pills look enough different from each other that I'll be able to track what's what.

I do have to decide whether or not to take anything with me for pain. I'm going to be hurting from sleeping on a bed that's not soft enough. I'm just not sure it's the kind of pain that Tylenol or naproxen can help with. Of course, I might end up with a non-migraine headache, and having something to take in that case would be a good thing.

I also don't know whether or not they'll have coffee available at breakfast at camp. I could see it going either way. They have to feed a certain number of adults and might have coffee available for that reason. On the other hand, the vast majority of people at the camp are kids who shouldn't be drinking coffee. Maybe I should take my instant coffee and a mug. I'm sure they'll have hot water. I don't know.

I find it useful to keep my meds in an opaque little cloth bag, like for toiletries or makeup. People are less likely to take stuff if they don't see it. As for the pain meds, it's probably not a good idea to bring along the whole bottle, but I would take a few, just in case.

When I'm traveling with kids, I keep my meds in my purse and keep my purse on my body at all times, except when I'm sleeping, when I keep them in my close personal space. No kids have ever shown any interest in it, especially by fifth grade age, but it feels more responsible to be extra careful. I *definitely* *would* take the pain meds along. If the vitamins make a noticeable difference in your energy level, I'd bring them along too, since this is a time when you will need extra reserves. If I think anybody might question me about the meds (like when crossing the border to Canada) I'll bring along the original containers for the meds, with just a few pills in each and the rest left at home in a ziplock bag that I label with a permanent marker to say what's in it. (That does add a lot of bulk, since a jar for 500 tablets takes up a lot of space even if it has only 5 tablets in it.) I bring along a couple of extras of each pill, beyond what I think I'm going to need, in case I drop one and it rolls into a place that is either unreachable or icky. Your mileage may vary -- these things are just what works for me.

Is there someone you can ask about coffee? Or alternatively, can you bring along something like chocolate covered espresso beans as a backup caffeine option? I'm pretty sure Trader Joe sells them.
