Last night, I had signed up to work at the cake walk at the school's ice cream social. They didn't have anybody there starting at six, so I started early. I only worked for about fifteen minutes before one of the folks running the event showed up with a high school student who was going to run the cake walk all evening. (There were a bunch of high school students helping out to get community service credits.) He didn't need me, so I left.

I was at loose ends, so I looked for other parents I knew. I talked to a few people, nothing too in depth. I also tried calling my parents again. I got my step-father. He told me that my mother's got kidney stones. That explains why she hasn't been sleeping.

Cordelia kept herself busy. She won the cake walk three times, but this year they did the prizes differently. It used to be that the winner got a plate or bag of goodies. This time, each winner got one cupcake or cookie or whatever. I'm not at all pleased with this change. $1.00 is a lot to pay for a one in ten chance of getting a cookie. The point of the cake walk is that a kid can win something worthwhile.

I helped a bit with counting up the money at the end of the evening. From what I gather, the event pretty much broke even. I thought it was a fund raiser but apparently not. At least the kids have a grand time.

Today's time in the school library was shorter than usual because there wasn't much to do. I shelved everything in about fifteen minutes. Then the librarian had me shelf read the fiction. That took maybe half an hour. Things weren't particularly out of order. Well, I suppose I could have taken longer about it if I'd been really picky I could have put the books in strict order. Fiction is shelved by the first three letters of the author's last name and no more carefully than that. Part of me wants to put things in strict order by author's last name and title, but that would have been a lot more work.

It's nice and cool outside, maybe about 70 F, so I've got the windows open. Unfortunately, the windows I can open (some windows, I'm simply not strong enough to open or tall enough to reach) don't create much of a cross current, so we don't get much air coming in.

How very odd! Cake walks usually ARE fundraisers, and I'd expect it to raise more money when each person is paying for a chance at less cake.
