Jun. 29th, 2014 08:45 pmIt's interesting to see which of my stories get responses on fanfiction.net. "Disembarking," a Chronicles of Narnia story about Eustace in the immediate aftermath of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, has gotten several comments which, given how it was received on AO3, I didn't expect. "Rustication," a Ranma 1/2 story featuring a romance between Ukyou and Mousse, has gotten three comments. Almost no one has even looked at it on AO3. The most popular story doesn't surprise me-- That would be "To the Least of These," the Narnia story about Aslan and the guinea pig.
I am trying to figure out the best way to respond to comments that boil down to, "I like this. I demand you write more of it." I don't expect to write more of any of the stories I've posted. I can see room for more for several of them, but I'm not interested in writing it because doing that would result in more epically long stories. I don't have room in my life for more of those, so I mean it when I mark something 'complete.'
I do wish I could find a FAQ or something about posting to fanfiction.net. I had to find out the chapter length limits by trial and error. (Well, I still don't know the exact limit. I know that 12000 words is too long, but I don't know the upper limit beyond that.) Even then, I just knew that I couldn't save the story as it was. I didn't get an error message saying that the dratted thing was too long. It just refused to save with no explanation. I guessed it was length, and, as I was able to save when I split the story in half, that seems to have been correct.

Date: 2014-07-02 11:15 pm (UTC)Like you, I have found differences in responses on AO3 and on ffnet, but then I've usually put the story on ffnet a day or so before I've put it on AO3. Can I ask what prompted you to try out ffnet?
(Also, what is IJ?)

Date: 2014-07-06 08:52 pm (UTC)I had a couple of people talk to me about how ffnet has a whole different set of readers than AO3 does. Then I talked to a friend who posts there and at AO3. She said that it skews younger but that she's made friends there. I'd had it in the back of my mind to try it for quite a while. I just never quite made the leap. Most of my stories are okay by ffnet's standards, so I thought why not post those there?

(I'm not sure that was at all useful.)
