Jul. 11th, 2014 06:17 pmA great victory for Cordelia and independence-- This afternoon, Cordelia took her purse and biked to Book Bound (local bookstore). It's quite a ways, but there's only one street to cross, and that's not even vaguely busy. When she left, she said she might get to the railroad tracks and turn back, but she called me when she got there to tell me she was going in. She bought two books with her own money and made her way home. I'm very pleased.
There's not a lot in that strip mall to attract her. I think Wendy's and Book Bound are about it. This is still a big step toward independence. She didn't think she could do it, but she did, and it was no big deal after all.
I'm not sure what the logical next step is. I'd like to teach her to ride the bus on her own, but she's been adamantly against that. I think she hasn't realized that there's a lot downtown and on central campus that might interest her. If she read more and faster, going to the library on her own might be a draw, but as it is, there's not much there that calls to her.
