Jun. 30th, 2010 10:22 amThe ultrasound on Monday showed a gall stone. It also showed a 'sludge' in my gallbladder that could spawn more gall stones at any moment. I'm praying that I can avoid another attack for the next few weeks until the more permanent step of removing the gallbladder can be taken.
I could tell that it's summer. My doctor was able to see me immediately after the ultrasound. I'd expected to have to wait several days (I'd made an appointment for tomorrow) to find out what the ultrasound showed. Instead, I walked straight down to see my doctor and had her write out the referral to surgery immediately. I felt a lot like things were moving too fast (even as I wanted them to).
The general surgery scheduling computer was down when the woman from the managed care office called to set up the appointment. I waited around for about twenty minutes, but we didn't hear back. I finally had to leave her with my scheduling parameters and hope. She called me about two hours later. I see the surgeon on the ninth (that's at the outer edge of the 'urgent' time window my doctor gave).
I'm in less pain now than I was last week. I'm hoping that that continues. Unfortunately, I've caught Cordelia's cold. Scott's got it too, and he's about three days ahead of me in it, so I can see the misery that's coming. He and I are both wishing that the next week or so would speed by so that we can breathe again and talk again.
I'm scared of the logistics of surgery. It's supposed to be a laproscopic procedure and ought to have a short recovery time, but it's still surgery, and I still have a seven year old. I'm going to need somebody to come with me the day of the surgery, to stay while I'm in surgery and take me home afterward. My understanding is that they won't start the procedure without that person present and waiting. I'm going to need to have somebody take Cordelia for a few days, too. That'll be either Scott's sister or Scott's parents, depending on timing. Both have times when they'll be away, but those times don't overlap, so I think we'll be okay one way or the other.
Of course, if I get another acute attack, the whole game plan changes. My doctor told me to go to the ER if things get severe. She said I'd see a surgeon immediately then. I guess we'll see what happens.
