We're now scheduled to have the roof done on Thursday. They think it'll be a one day job. I hope they're right. Our house isn't very big, but there's a lot of wood they're going to have to tear out and replace. We can't use the driveway while they're working.

Thursday is probably the least convenient day for the work. It's not horrible, but that's the day I work in the school library (the woman who scheduled us said that's an advantage because the work will be noisy). It's also the day the cleaning lady comes. I'll have to apologize to her for the noise.

I'm utterly indifferent as to what color the new roof is, but they insisted that I look at some samples. I think they're (not unreasonably) worried about putting on a roof and having us hate the color. I think it's unlikely that I'll develop much of an opinion. I don't look at our roof. I have no idea what color the current roof is. I don't think Scott has an opinion on the color of the roof either. I've e-mailed him to ask, and I suspect we can wait the decision until after he sees the samples, too.

Dark colors will keep the house warmer, and light colors will keep the house cooler, if you don't care aesthetically.

Could you ask the roof people to come on a more convenient day next week? Or was Thursday of this week the only day available anytime soon, maybe because someone cancelled?

We've had to choose a roof shingle color in the past, and didn't really care. I think that black to absorb heat or white to reflect it are the two colors that make the most sense. After we had to decide about a shingle color, I started noticing other people's roofs all over town for a few months after that, but then I stopped noticing again.

dark colored roofs tend to heat your house up more in the summer, however in winter the snow melts off them faster. If I recall correctly you aren't fond of it being very warm so you might go with a grey roof rather than black, I wish I'd been given an option because my house temp shot up by 20 degrees in late afternoons after getting a black roof put on.
