I baked a cake yesterday. Family tradition is that we have a 'treat' some time between dinner and bedtime. Most of the time, it's ice cream, but Cordelia has a head cold, so ice cream is currently a very bad idea. I thought that a cake would fill in nicely.
We had two flavors of frosting, cherry vanilla and caramel (the frosting comes as a base white frosting with flavor packets that can be mixed in). Cordelia said she didn't care, so I picked randomly and ended up with the caramel. I expected to hate the frosting because, previous times when we've used this kind (though not this flavor), there was a chemical taste that I really disliked. I figured it didn't matter because I don't have the cold yet and could have ice cream or nothing at all. The caramel frosting, however, didn't have that chemical taste. I assumed it was the brand, but it must have been the specific flavor. Unfortunately, I have no idea what flavor it was that bothered me.
Our shingles will be a dark gray color that's called weathered wood. The roofing company suggested that as the most neutral, inoffensive option when I said I really didn't care. They said it's great because you can paint your house any color at all and not have the roof clash. The idea of the roof clashing never once occurred to me. Not that we're going to paint our house. We have aluminum siding that's kind of a dingy white and see no reason to spend the money to change.
The woman who came by to show me the shingles told me that the roofers will show up between seven and eight on Thursday, so I will likely be here when they arrive. I want to make sure they settle in fine before I disappear to the school library. If it weren't Thursday, with the library in the morning and the cleaning lady in the afternoon, I'd be tempted to go downtown to get away from the noise of the roof work. Unfortunately, that really won't work on a Thursday. Oh, well. We do have ear plugs in the basement somewhere. Maybe those will help.
