Last night was our parent-teacher conference. It was also Cordelia's first volleyball practice. Scott and I dropped Cordelia off at the gym at 6:00 then went upstairs to wait for our 6:20 appointment. We were to see both teachers at the same time.

Unfortunately, the teachers were running late. It was about 6:45 when we finally got in, and the discussion was a little rushed because mainly what the teachers had to say is that Cordelia is doing well and seems to have a good group of friends. She does well on standardized tests and has tested above grade level in both math and reading. I did bring up wanting her to try reading something other than Rick Riordan. The English teacher hadn't realized that Cordelia was rereading the books. We also discussed wanting Cordelia to learn to take certain types of risks (including reading new things!). The planned curriculum should encourage that because they're going to be doing a lot of creative projects and group projects, things with no one right answer. The science project we discussed had to do with water as a world resource and what to do about the scarcity of fresh water. There is no answer that sixth graders are likely to come up with that will solve that problem.

Scott offered to get some gallon bottles for the class to use for their water project. He makes plastic bottles, and he says it ought to be trivial and cheap to give the class a couple of bags of bottles. He thinks his company will be willing to do it.

Because we hadn't yet had dinner, Scott and I drove to Wendy's and did the drive through. We had to pick Cordelia up on the way back, and she was very peeved with us for not buying her anything.

Scott is getting good at climbing in and out of the car from the passenger side. He was supposed to get the lock looked at on Tuesday, but work kept him too late. Now he's aiming for tomorrow. I've got my fingers crossed that they don't keep him late at work again.

They've set the date and place for the memorial for my grandfather. It will be at my uncle's house in East Lansing on Sunday the 12th. Scott is sure he can get the necessary time off. Funerals are covered that way. I don't know if my mother or my sister will be coming. I know my sister wants to come and to bring her son, but I don't know if she'll be able to come. The last I heard, two of my out of state cousins still hadn't checked in as to whether or not they could come. I hope they do come. I haven't seen them in decades.

There are two clumps of cousins on my mother's side. She and her oldest brother both had kids early, so there were four of us girls within about four years. Then my brother came along a few years later, too young to be part of the group with us girls and too old to be part of the group that started up around the time I turned eighteen when my mother's two younger brothers started having kids. There are five kids in that group, three boys and two girls, and I don't know any of them well.

If you want her to branch out from Rick Riordan, but she doesn't want to branch out very FAR, you might want to give her "The Shadow Thieves," by Anne Ursu. It's the beginning of an excellent trilogy about Minneapolis teenagers and greek gods.

Saying they're "teenagers" implies a certain level of emotional sophistication she may find off-putting, but they're just in 8th grade.

I'm glad that Cordelia's teachers are going to help her branch out, reading-wise. Perhaps it will have more weight if it comes from a different authority figure.

I hope Scott has no trouble getting time off for the funeral.
