Dec. 28th, 2014 01:26 pmScott's parents gave us several ornaments that they no longer have room for on their new, smaller tree. A couple of them are quite heavy and were culled on the grounds that they were too heavy for their tree. Our tree is the same size as theirs, so I'm not sure what the point is. The heavy ornaments are very pretty, of course. They also gave us a strand of lights we can't use and a partial set of blue glass balls that are meant to go over lights. We tried one. It wasn't very impressive. It also didn't attach firmly to the strand of lights, so they'd be on the verge of falling off the entire time.
We're gathering up another load of stuff to take to donate. Scott decided that our double pot, the one with a strainer as the interior pot, should go. We don't use it if there are other options because it's very, very difficult to clean if we use it for pasta which seems to be what it's meant for. I suppose it could be used for steaming things, but the area under the strainer part is very small, and the pot is very, very deep. I've used the bottom part of it for making big pots of soup, for example. It's just that we have another pot that does that every bit as well.
We're also getting rid of my father's gifts to Cordelia. He gave her a hat, gloves, and scarf set in bright pink. She hates pink, doesn't wear hats or scarves, and has other gloves that will stand up to snow better. He also got her a backpack in colors she doesn't like (pink and camoflauge). Since she picked out the backpack she currently uses, she much prefers that. Her current backpack is in great shape (it's from Land's End and only about a year old).
I was hoping that Christmas ornaments would be cheaper after Christmas, but they don't seem to be, at least not the kind I like. I guess I just have expensive taste in that direction. Scott doesn't feel that we need different ornaments and thinks I'm a bit strange for wanting ornaments that are more breakable than the things we already have. Half of what we've got is unbreakable bulbs. I'm just bored with them. I grew up with a tree that had no two ornaments alike. There were wooden ones my mother had painted. There were paper doves my sister and I had decorated. There were a lot of fancy glass bulbs. Some years, we made gingerbread for the tree; other years we used store bought windmill cookies. We had wrapped chocolate ornaments (which I can't find in stores these days. I've found them online, but it's something like $15 for six of them, so not worth it). We did strands of popcorn and cranberries. I wonder what happened to those ornaments? My mother and step-father don't celebrate Christmas any more, so they're not using them. I suspect they gave them away.
I am looking into buying the various bits of clothing I had on my Christmas wishlist. The need for that stuff hasn't gone away just because I didn't get it for Christmas. As it turns out, some of the stuff I didn't get wouldn't have fit anyway (which is a pity because it's pretty), so I suppose I should be glad no one bought it. Basically, only Scott and Scott's parents give me gifts. Scott didn't use my wishlist at all (which resulting in him giving me things I don't care very much about). His parents used it but weren't willing to follow links to websites other than Amazon. I suppose I should be glad they're willing to buy online at all. Five years ago, they wouldn't even touch Amazon.
I need to spend the next few days cleaning the house. We're having people over on New Year's Eve, and it would be nice to have at least the living room, dining room, kitchen, and bathroom clean. Our cleaning lady usually comes on Thursdays and is dependent for transportation on the buses which didn't run on Christmas and won't run on New Year's Day. She said she might try to come earlier in the week this week, but I can't count on it, and she wouldn't make a dent in the piles of stuff that take up the corners of the dining room and parts of the couch and loveseat in the living room.
I can hear Cordelia talking in her room. I think she's playing with her dolls. She's quieter when she's on the phone or doing FaceTime. I'm glad she's not too old for dolls yet.
Well, I'd better get started on the laundry, that and the dishes. Scott made sugar glass yesterday, so there's a cookie sheet to be hand washed. That's going to be loads of fun. It's got chunks of candy and streaks of food coloring all over it, and it won't actually fit in the sink.
