Dec. 31st, 2014 08:08 amWe're up early and waiting for Scott to get home. Cordelia's friend just arrived. She came early because it was the only time today that her father could drop her off. We didn't expect Scott to be off (he is, after working 3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.), so we couldn't plan on having him pick her up, and, like me, her mother doesn't drive.
I have a lot to do, but I'm not feeling very motivated to get started. I've got some leeway. Normally, on a New Year's Eve, I wouldn't get up for a couple of hours yet. The turkey doesn't really need to be in the oven until around 1:00, so I've got plenty of time for the sweet potatoes and the stuffing. I haven't decided how I want to do the sweet potatoes. There are so many options. Maybe I'll go minimalist and just add a little butter after I mash them. The one recipe I have calls for cider (which I don't have) and maple syrup (which I don't have much of). Fortunately, sweet potatoes are hard to mess up.
I'm currently trying to decide whether or not I should run the dishwasher at only two thirds full. I'm going to need the silverware clean, and all of the dishes I expect to dirty are big ones that won't fit in the space currently available (I can fit two large things in per load. More than that and I'm hand washing because things won't fit. I already have two large things). I hate to run the dishwasher when it isn't full, but... Perhaps I should, just this once.
Scott's going to be torn between the need to clean the house and the need to nap. Just excavating the dining room table will take a couple of hours, and some of the 'cleaning' will involve moving things into our bedroom for the time being. If he does that first, he won't be able to reach the bed later. I think I'll suggest a compromise-- a two to three hour nap followed by cleaning. We do need to sweep, too. Our cleaning lady normally comes on Thursdays, so she hasn't been for two weeks and won't come this week.
I would like to have our other guests come around 3:00 so that there's time to play games before dinner, but I don't know if it will work out. Scott thinks we'll require the time for cleaning. I think we'll be done by then and he'll be bored. I think I'm going to ask them to come then with the caveat that we might still be cleaning.
I have a number of things I want to buy, but I'm putting them off. I spent a lot of money in November and December (more in November, I think), and I ought not spend quite so much in January. For example, I want to buy some good socks, preferably knee socks, but I'm fat, and it's hard to predict which socks will actually fit my calves. I've poked around Sock Dreams a little, and most of what I like is either definitely too small or isn't labeled as to how large it is. I've found two that I actually like and two that I don't actively object to.
