the_rckSo that I don't forget the information, I'm putting the information on the chairs I tried at IKEA here, behind a cut tag. I know I'll lose it otherwise, and I may well want it again more than once.
These are my top three picks. I like the Tobias best in terms of comfort, but I suspect we'll end up with the Gilbert and cushions because that's cheaper. I tried the Gilbert first and the Tobias last. I think that my judgment on the Gilbert was harsher than it would have been if I'd been comparing it to something other than my ideal chair (I originally gave it a 3+ and then took that to a 4 after trying a lot of other chairs). My judgment on the Tobias may be equally clouded by the feeling of suddenly resting my behind on something vaguely comfortable that didn't have other issues.
Gilbert 4 rounded edge good, but hard seat and a little narrow, height good. Try cushion? Not too expensive even w/cushion added.

Any of these would be acceptable if absolutely necessary, but I wouldn't be particularly thrilled with them. They're mostly survivable, just not great.

I put the following chairs out of the running completely. I didn't hate the 2s. I could sit on one long enough to eat a quick meal, but I'd be thinking the whole time about how soon I could get up again. The 1s I'd do my absolute best to avoid sitting on ever.

I tried a few folding chairs and am recording my rating just in case we decide we need folding chairs later on. I hate most folding chairs, finding them too small and too hard. That makes the 2+ a positively ringing endorsement of comfort as I've never sat on a folding chair that would make a 3.
