We had the first practice session for Rock Hunters on Saturday. I think, on the whole, it went well. There's so much information I'm asking the kids to memorize, and I have no idea how to make it easier.

The boy who is Delia's teammate is quite shy. He barely said a word the whole time, and he made his mother stay (I suppose it's a good thing we're practicing on Saturday when she can stay). He's enthusiastic about rocks, however, and seems quite serious about learning about them.

I got a couple of the recommended rock books from the library. One is useless and will be going back next week. The other is exactly what I need. I wish I'd bought it instead of the expensive, highly recommended ('Go to this book first!' they said) book I actually bought. The highly recommended book is nearly useless. It's very pretty, but it contains none of the information I'm supposed to be teaching the kids. The useful book from the library contains most of what I need. I just have to copy out the facts and put them into a handout that I can give the kids.

Scott and the other mother helped a lot with the practice session. I think they both know more about rocks than I do.

We have a set of samples of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, and we went over those with the kids. Where we're lacking is mineral specimens. Some are relatively easy-- Graphite, for example, just requires grabbing a pencil. Others are harder-- I'm not sure I can find talc or a diamond. I'm going to be keeping my fingers crossed that they're quizzed on the rocks we've got and not on the ones we don't.
