Cordelia's field trip appears to have gone well. She walked herself home after the bus got them back to the school, and she says it was, "Good." I'd have pressed for more information, but we had company and were kind of in the middle of things when she got home.

It was a little strange not having Cordelia home at three, but it did give me time to buckle down and write about 1600 words of my remix. That means I've made the minimum length. I've also covered everything that happens in the original story. It's tempting to call it done, but I'm not sure I can get away with that, given the twist I've put on the situation. I'm also more than a little concerned that my POV character might be OOC.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure who I know besides Scott who knows the canon, and I don't know if he'll be able to tell me what I need to know. Well, I know my sixteen year old nephew knows the canon, but there's no way I'm asking him to take a look. I have remixed this fandom before, so I suppose I should see who I got to beta last time and try to find out if they have time to take a look. I wish this weren't anonymous so that I could ask publicly for a beta. I strongly suspect there are people reading here who know this fandom. It's just that I may very well be the only person remixing in this fandom. Of course, I'm pretty sure my remixee doesn't read my journal or hang out in the same writing communities I do, so maybe I could get away with it. I don't know.

Scott's FATE game met last night. One player was absent. He misses a lot of sessions because he's got a one year old daughter (who's adorable!). It's kind of a pity he wasn't present; I think his character would be useful in the situation that's currently going on. Then again, I have no idea what he can actually do, so maybe not.

We had a long discussion before the game began because one of the players has been deeply, deeply unhappy with the FATE system. She gave it several months to see if she could get used to it enough not to be frustrated while playing it, and things haven't gotten better for her because the system is intentionally geared for a style of play that she fundamentally doesn't enjoy. We talked about a lot of different game systems and considered a lot of different options. In the end, we tweaked the FATE system. Instead of rolling four dice, from here on out, we'll be rolling two with the option of adding a third and fourth separately after our initial roll if we want to risk it.

In FATE, there are three options on the dice-- plus, minus, and blank. The total on the dice modifies a player's skill number, and the maximum possible skill number for most things is four (My character has a six in medicine due to something special called a stunt. Each character has three stunts. Some are harder to use than others). Each character gets one skill at a four, then (I think) two at a three, and so on. That means that, if one rolls four dice, one can and frequently does fail at even the character's strongest skill when trying to do something simple. There are mechanisms for overcoming that in order to get a so-so success (which, of course, may not actually be good enough to do anything useful), but they require a certain amount of work.

Personally, I liked rolling two dice with the option for more. I didn't end up rolling more, and I suspect I won't, but one player did more than once. I had been working pretty hard, before last night, to play in such a way as to minimize the number of die rolls I had to make because I'd seen the FATE dice come up bad a lot more often than good.

I slept well last night which was a great relief. I was afraid the heat (which has not subsided and likely won't all summer) would keep me awake again, but it didn't. I think, too, that knowing that I have something done for Remix helped quiet my mind which, some nights, runs in circles and won't let me sleep. I even slept through Cordelia getting up, which I usually don't. She had to wake me for her goodbye hug.

I didn't get my chores done yesterday, so I'll have to do them this morning. They absolutely must be done by the time the cleaning lady arrives around 2:00. It's just that both tasks seem more daunting than they are, so I'll keep finding excuses to put them off until I can't any more.

I hope Scott's not working late tonight. He hasn't so far this week, so I'm concerned that he might have to. We're almost out of leftovers (most of what we've got is mac 'n' cheese), so cooking tonight seems like a good idea, but I'm not sure what we've got to cook. Scott didn't buy any meat the last time he shopped, and even if he had, I'd rather not run the oven for an hour to cook it. We might have some tilapia in the freezer, and that only takes about twelve minutes in the oven. We also might have potstickers, assuming I can persuade Cordelia to eat them, and those can be cooked on the stovetop.

Scott mentioned last night that the supervisor spot on second shift is still vacant after about three months. Basically, they want an internal candidate, someone who already knows how things work, and nobody at all is willing to take that job on the terms offered. Scott's of the opinion that $10,000 a year more than what they're offering wouldn't be enough. As I recall, there was some possibility that the senior supervisor from third shift might move to second and fill that slot, but that hasn't happened.

I probably don't know the canon for your remix, but you're welcome to email me and ask, in case I do.
